Wichita State strength and conditioning coach Kerry Rosenboom is very, extremely, mucho pleased with the men’s basketball team’s work this summer. So much so that he is throwing around weighty superlatives.

Toure Murry runs a 4:54 mile
Clevin Hannah is up 20 pounds
Kenny Manigault can bench press 185lbs 13 times.

A 4:54 mile is very impressive. More impressive to me than the multiple lifts of 185#s.

I assuming Torre did no work to lower his time like speed work etc.

    Nice.

    From Sullentrop's blog:

Rosenboom says the freshmen’s performance indicate that Marshall is bringing in a higher class of athlete and is a credit to their high school weight training. Rosenboom said Claudius Johnson and John Smith (two of the strongest recent Shockers) couldn’t do 165 when they arrived at WSU. Paul Miller and P.J. Couisnard were under 185 as freshmen.

I keep thinking this is going to be a completely different type of team than we've had at WSU in a long, long time. Then something like this comes along and reminds me of how different this team really is going to be.

Overall: Bigger, stronger, faster. Work ethic seems to have made it to the Fr.

It's good to get a reminder that Ellis not only had the bad toe last year, but also spent most of that summer working on academics. Ellis has put on some weight and is #2 on the team (behind Durley) in bench presses.

Stutz is right on time to start the season at 250 - 255 lbs.

WSU has to be considered one of many Valley schools that doesn't have a solid front court rotation returning, but with the bulk and strength that Durley, Ellis, Hamilton, Stutz, and Blair are carrying, they should be able to wear down most Valley front courts. WSU can trot out a lot of total pounds of D1 front court players.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Academics are over rated in my opinion, unless it is related to eligibility.

When D-1 college athletes spend most of the summer working on academics, ABC, you can take it to the bank that it is related to eligibility.

I find it a little concerning that Blair is weaker on the bench press than 3 of our freshmen. We've heard very little about him so far.

I will say that Hamilton coming in third should be no surprise at all. Ellis being second is. I wouldn't have though KJ and Richardson would top Blair though. That one has me scratching my head a bit.

Hopefully it is not a sign of another AJ.

AJ was a decent fill-in player that we all thought would be a star, although he probably played more than he should have due to roster limitations. Fortunately, I think we're now in a position where we don't need Blair to be a star. I certainly hope he's the hustler and rebounder he's been made out to be though.

Ah, the desperation born of summer boredom. Hawkins struggled with his shot and charged routinely on his way to the basket -- how much would his bench press have helped him in those areas? If Rosenboom is satisfied with Blair, we should be too.

I kinda wonder how X's numbers would have compared? X thought he was the best conditioned player that year, I wouldn't argue. Given todays climate I doubt if he or Carr or Sherrod would have put in 4 years.

Interesting, Z -- I was actually wondering the same thing, because the X who came to WSU wasn't bulky at all -- and really never bulked up all that much. I think there was probably less emphasis on weight work back then. But he was definitely strong enough.

Running a mile at a sub 5 clip is pretty good - certainly shows endurance.
Also impressive is that KM is benching 185lbs 13x, and with his long arms, that is a lot of vertical movement!
