Wichita Bids on NCAA basketball Games

Do people from KC come to Wichita for the attractions or shopping? No, Wichitans go to KC. We can't even keep our own people in our city, let alone attract people from outside it to come here. Our airport is expensive, and doesn't have many flights from all over. We have no attractions, minimal hotels, and no atmosphere downtown.

I do not think we were bypassed for any of the reasons mentioned...especially not because we built an inferior arena...Most if not all of those other cities have arenas that are at least a few years old with a track record..and they have had their requests in for a much longer period of time...Our arena is not even open yet...It has no track record and is the new guy in town. The NCAA officials came and saw...They will remember us in the future and assuming our arena is moderatley successful..Our turn will come.

The only problem with Wichita, unfortunately, is about half the population! If you voted no on the arena...you're the problem. If you voted no on the bond to improve our schools, you're the problem. If you voted no on the Casino, you're the problem. It is nice to see we are slowing starting to move forward in some areas, but it's going to take time will the negative people scared of anything different.

It's kinda sad when places like Dodge City and Mulvane are becoming bigger destination cities that Wichita... :(

It is true that Wichita lacks progressive thinkers and leaders. I wonder if some of that issue happens to be due to the form of city gov't and the infighting that takes place between county and city officials.

-- Water Walk that can't get off of the ground
-- Casino vote and mixed messages coming from city and county leaders
-- New Airport Terminal is stalled
-- Airport is even called "Mid-Continent" when in reality it could be considered an "International" airport. It's like the city sets it up to be second rate.
-- New Arena built just a bit too small without the ability to expand
-- No football at WSU and an underutilized school in the state's largest city

However, I'm pretty confident that once hotels, restaurants, parking, and better infrastructure takes hold near the arena, IBA and Wichita will be rewarded with an NCAA game. You really can't blame them at this time. It will happen though. The place isn't even open yet.

You must not get out much... Tulsa IS "better".

More dining, retail, and entertainment options.
More outdoor recreational opportunities (as in WAY more).
More job opportunities for people not fitting into the engineering or manual/production laborer categories.
Lower white trash factor.

Basically, one would be hard pressed to objectively construct a comparo between Wichita and Tulsa which would show Wichita on top. And no, I don't necessarily have any biases towards Tulsa, nor do I want to live there, it's just that Wichita sucks THAT bad.

I got no problem with people of a city voting on what they want and don't want. Majority rules.....I guess what I don't understand is how can the people who voted no on the arena or the schools be the problem in this particular situation? both measures passed.

I have no problem with improving the city and using tax payers dollars to do it. What I do have a problem with and what I tried to explain in the Its september topic is when people look around at the cities nearest us and try to compare. You can't make up for hundreds of thousands of people by building things (I'm not saying Wichita missed ncaa's because of this). I just get the feeling that sometimes the non "cave" dwellers try to argue Wichita could be a greater destination than surrounding metros. I don't see how that is possible.

First off all of the midwest metros are well in the midwest. The great plains don't necessarly attract people. Second off we would have to offer something completely different than Tulsa, OKC, Omaha in order to take from thier "tourist" money.

Just common sense.... draw a line halfway between here and OKC, TULSA, KC and then somewhere in western kansas (anybody closer to denver or Colorado springs is going there). Thats the boundries of what your trying to attract unless your offering something totally uniquie from those other cities.

A casino would have been like a patio light on a summers night to bugs 20 years ago. Now everybody and I mean everybody has them. You won't get people from Oklahoma they have them same with KC, Topeka, and Omaha. I have no clue with Colorado and casinos so maybe Wichita will be losing out to dodge city on that one but i doubt it.
