Wichita Bids on NCAA basketball Games

No. It winds up as an ACC or UNC Greensboro host so both Duke and UNC don't have to travel far.

Couple years ago OU changed its host bid to be the Big XII so they could play in OKC or Norman.

If we got in, and were in line to play in Wichita, we could just change the host bid to the MVC.

Bob Hansen was on Sports Daily today and touched on the topic. He said it's gonna be top-of-the-line, ribbon board, everything. The seats are apparently gonna be burgandy colored. He said the upper deck's seats are already installed. He also knocked the Quiet Center in Omaha for its lack of color. IBA is gonna be the opposite, he said.

I have been looking forever for information on the arena interior awesome to see we are getting a Ribbon Board! Those things are awesome. Can't wait to see some basketball there.

You are correct hosts cannot play at their hosting sites.

I THINK the rule is that a team cannot play in an NCAA 1st/2nd round in their home arena, but playing a game or two in said arena, even as a "home" game, does not violate that rule. IIRC, the NCAA wants us to play some games there so the staff can become familiar with basketball game procedures. Whether or not we can be the official host or not, I don't know. I'm sure there are ways to get around that stipulation.

As for thinking we would ever get anything beyond 1st/2nd round for the men's tournament, keep dreaming. Nowadays two of the four regional sites will always be in the two upcoming Final Four big stadium sites as dress rehearsals, and the other two will be in large cities. So, IMHO, the limiting factor knocking us out of getting a regional is city size and hotel availabilities. In fact, hotel availability could impact our ability to get a 1st/2nd round, as I'm sure the NCAA specs are pretty high.

I remember from last years tournament that the rule is 4 games. You can't play a NCAA tournament game in your home area or any other venue where you played 4 games in during the current regular season. Last year, Villanova played 3 games in a certain area and then moved a forth late because they didn't want to be disqualified from playing there in post season play. They were allowed to play there for the first and second round.

The game is taking place in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center, which is essentially a home game for the Wildcats since they play a number of games there during the year. This will be an interesting matchup for the Eagles against the guard-heavy Wildcat squad

That's also true, but the previous rules discussed go as well. In Nova's case, there are about 37 D1 schools in the city that can host. But if you play 4 games in an arena then it's considered a home court and you're not allowed to play there during Tourney time.

Add in the fact that all those locations have more hotels and places to stay and are way cheaper and easier to fly into and it really becomes obvious that it never could have happened in the first place.

Tulsa knows how to build an arena and look what it gets them.. C-USA Tournament, NCAA Tournament, etc.

This is just to bad....I was really hoping for it to happen. I really don't think that the airfare pricing has any effect, it can't be any cheaper than flying to tulsa, omaha, or cleveland for that matter. Hotel pricing isn't that much of an issue either, plenty of fair prices less than 10 miles away.

This will just add to the whoa are us mentality, that plagues our good city. Not to mention the cannon fodder for the anti arena crowd.

Well I hope we give it a shot after 2013...I will bet we get some of the women's tourney games though. WhaHooo.

Everyone who says we didn't get the tournament because of the Arena are blind. The reason we didn't get the tournament is because Wichita is an awful tourist destination. Do people from KC come to Wichita for the attractions or shopping? No, Wichitans go to KC. We can't even keep our own people in our city, let alone attract people from outside it to come here. Our airport is expensive, and doesn't have many flights from all over. We have no attractions, minimal hotels, and no atmosphere downtown.

Why try to keep acting like Wichita is a place to come to? We should try and work on playing up that its cheap to live, the crime is low, we have a nice university, and great surrounding schools. Stop trying to act like Wichita is, or is going to be this hub of midwestern entertainment. Its not.
