The Memphis men's basketball program has been charged by the NCAA with major violations during the 2007-08 season under former coach John Calipari, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported on Wednesday.

Interesting! If found guilty this time, will UK keep Calipari? He just brought in the No.1 recruiting class.

Looks like both Memphis and Ky could get into trouble

Sorry. I don't think UK cares what "Coach Cal" has done in the past as long as UK doesn't have to pay for it either in dollars or in some other form of penalty. It's the "win at all costs" mentality that makes up college sports today, and I personally think iit is very sad. Even if Calipari is somehow found to be at fault for this, the smell won't stick. UK is a BCS school and a powerhouse (albeit not in the recent past) in the college hoops world.

He cheated at UMass, could not cheat in the pros and got fired for losing. he has cheated at Memphis.

Who does not know yet that "Coach Cal" cheats?

It will be interesting to see if Memphis is proven guilty & their final 4 appearance disappears from the record books. CBS Sports indirectly reports the player is Derrick Rose.

In other news, Billy Gillispie is suing Kentucky for at least $6 million.

Did you not read the article?

Peevy told ESPN.com on Wednesday night Calipari was up front with Kentucky prior to his hiring. He said Kentucky was made aware of the allegation.

"It's important to note that there are no allegations against John Calipari in the report," Peevy said.

Coach Cal and Turgeon are good friends. He got his start as a volunteer assistant under Larry Brown at KU...hmmmm. Interesting associations there...

Are you sure about the "good friends" part SC?

Yes there is a history, and you're right about the timeline. I am not under the impression that they are all that good of friends.

They are certainly not alike in many ways. If they are really friends, I would be surprised.

Calipari, imho, is as dirty as a coach can be. They can say he isn't named, but if players are getting money as alleged, then he is guilty of not paying attention.....and I think we all can agree that if true, it is much deeper than that.

I remeber hearing Kevin Keitzmen say about a month ago that he didn't know one person in NCAA basketball who didn't think Calipari was a full time cheater. He said this on air. I really was swayed by that statement and was not surprised one bit today by these accusations.

If you're a consistent winner like Memphis has been and you also regularly recruit and sign 5* athletes, the allegations (true or false) most likely come with the territory… the BCS schools don’t like anyone crashing their little party. When a non-BCS school lands a 5* recruit, the Roy Williams’ of the world immediately cry foul (i.e., Mo Evans). I’m not trying to defend John Calipari because he does come across as an arrogant ‘prack’. There’s little doubt that the non-BCS schools are scrutinized more closely by the NCAA when it comes to recruiting.

Here’s a classic from 1994 (read some of the comments about Calipari):

Is it "dirtier" to completely break NCAA rules (Tarkanian, Bozeman, Sampson, Harrick) or to become adept at following the letter of the law while completely destroying it's spirit?

It's a dirty business, but I think the system works. The NCAA rules are so stringent that when an infraction occurs, we're usually taking about winter coats and a few thousand dollars, maybe the use of a vehicle from a donor that owns a dealership. We're not talking real corruption and murder... well unless you're Baylor.

I remember Turg mentioning his friendship/relationship with Cal several times when he was at WSU. One thing in particular was a comment he made about guys that he goes to for advice or that call him to congratulate him when he reaches goals (like the sweet 16). He mentioned that he regularly talked to Cal, Mark Few, Roy, Larry Brown that I can remember. I believe Cal might have been one of the "good friends" that Turg mentioned that he peeved off a little when he was trying to put together a good schedule and nobody would play the Shox. I think they were at KU together at one point. I am in no way insuating that Turgeon is dirty just because he is friends with Cal. That wasn't my intention. Turgeon, by all accounts, is a coach who does things the right way.

I do believe that ShockCity is correct. It even lead to some long shot hopes on here that maybe we could get something setup with Memphis.

I don't have the greatest respect for Turgeon, but would never put him in Cal's company
