  • great article on randy smithson today.....

...still one of my favorite shockers...and this article talks a lot about the demons in his life.hope he has success overcoming them!

btw, i posted this in the BASKETBALL section, because he used to be the basketball player and coach at WSU...hope this was the right place!

I never thought that laundry would ever be "aired" quite so publicly.

Watching Randy struggle for years, especially when he coached WSU was beyond painful. That the administration didn't have to wherewithall to make a change in the face of painfully obvious signals is mind blowing.

We may never fully realize how monumentally huge the Jim Schaus hiring was to the salvation of our program.

In some cases that may be what it takes

The very best of luck to a great Shocker player and former coach. May his devils be buried forever.

That's pretty nice logic, except that you forgot something.

          The link.

            He really looks old!
I have come here to chew bubblegum and kickass ... and I'm all out of bubblegum.

I wish him the best of luck and great success. As others have said--he's one of the all-time greats, and it's too bad that things didn't work out better for him as coach--obviously not meant to be.

I miss hearing Randy on Shocker Soundoff during the season... having he and his father's insights were nice. Perhaps someday he'll come back (no advertising being sold clause in his contract? LOL)

I hope Randy gets his problems solved and as far as I am concerned he should be involved with Shocker Bball in some capacity forever. He is part of one of the greatest teams in Shocker History.

Anyone else think that his 'Demons' were genetically inherited?

People make choices, and he made his. The good news is he's now making better ones or at least attempting to, which is a great step!

While genetics may play small parts in these equations, there are thousands if not millions of folks around the world that may or may not have been 'genetically' dispositioned to such things due to family heritage and history, BUT have chosen not to go down that dark and lonely path.

That's not to say that I'm in any way making light of Mr. Smithson's efforts and struggles. I'll be pulling for him and agree with that it would be great to have him a part of Shocker basketball--in some way or another.

                    :goshocks:

Anyone who has fought these demons, or had a family member who did, and has persevered understands what he is going through. Those who haven't, while certainly sympathetic, don't understand the toll it takes on everyone. Props to Randy for being open about it and best of luck to him.

I think people are genetically predisposed to having certain personality traits that can lead to addictive behaviors. People deal with life's ups and downs in many different ways. One thing that cannot be questioned is Randy's love for Wichita State and his desire to see the university succeed. He is a true Shocker!

Perhaps, but living a clean life will certainly reverse a lot of that. Besides, it beats being dead.
