  • Expectations!!

I have a lot of confidence in GM to pick the right guys that will lead our program to success. However, are we all real comfortable being a Winthrop?

I guess we all have our heads in the air to expect high rated reruits, but this last recruit seems puzzling to me. Maybe he is the guy that just fits the team perfect and will really be a great piece of the puzzle.

Sorry, I am just still looking for that X-Man that Gene seemed to be able to go out and find. Before anybody wants to beat me up, I realize that X was not a high rated recruit out of So. Carolina, but he had some major schools wanting him.

Anyway, I do love Coach Marshall and respect the hell out of what he has done here to turn things around. Sorry, I just don't want to be another Winthrop. I want to get back to being a top ten team. If I'm dreaming then let me dream, we did it before and we should be able to do it again.

So what you're telling me is we should be a Memphis or at the very least a Gonzaga?

Yes, and you can't even be a perennial winner of the MVC unless you at least shoot for being a Memphis or Gonzaga.

Yes! Certainly no reason we can't be as competitive year-in / year-out as Gonzaga.

          Hmmm, where to start.

I think everyone here, save KCShox, would like to be a "top 10" program. If memory serves me correctly, and if I gauge your age correctly (and I'm fairly certain I do) we've been a top 10 team for about 3 weeks in your lifetime. While an admirable goal, it's neither realistic nor attainable, at least for any length of time. I feel certain you have no idea what it really takes to be a top 10 program. We talk about Gonzaga and what they have done is remarkable, and they aren't a top 10 program. I think also you'll find that Memphis' run is about to come to a screeching halt.

I don't know how you can question any recruit at this time. I don't think there is anyone he has brought in that's been a bust so far, in terms of a needed skill set. There aren't any Matt Clarks, Zach Greens, Kurt Bangles, Zach Simmons, Ryan Bradleys, Chris Browns, Arbry Butlers or frankly even considering their successes elsewhere, Adam Libertys or Calvin Walls.

I realize that a couple of those players were setback with injuries....hardly the fault of anyone, but let's not kid ourselves. Perhaps in a year or 2 we can change our minds....but for now decisions look pretty solid to me.

There are questions, for sure. But for now, the future looks to be in very good hands and about as strong as we can imagine.

Opposed to what? Being a perennial loser that has been WSU basketball for the last 20 years except for a few year under Turgeon?

If you mean a perennial NCAA team - I'm sure alot of fans would take that at this point. The first step is you have to get to the NCAA's.

2nd thing is the environment that Winthrop lived in really limited any success they might have. Success in the NCAA tournament really depends on seeding. Winthrop never would have a chance to get a very good seed. Winning in the MVC will possibly give a team chance at a decent chance for success and to be more than a CU (one-and-done).

I would be very happy if we accomplish the same things that Winthrop accomplished while HCGM was there:

Win the league year in and year out
Go to the NCAA's every year
Play national powerhouses in non-con schedule

All sounds pretty good to me.

HCGM is recruiting and landing some really good players. I am really impressed so far.

With all due respect to MT, he built the program slowly and did a great job but it was a one hit wonder. There was no future Paul Miller and PJ on the bench waiting for those two to graduate.

HCGM has a plan for sustained winning. It appears that we have solid players in every class.

My expectations have always been somewhat more modest and probably realistic than "top 10". It seems to me that being a top 50 program...like Tulsa has been until recently, and like Gonzaga..and yes, even SIU and Creighton, should be the goal ....I want to be in the NCAA 3 out of every 4 years with a chance to go deep once in a while...Its baby steps..and once we get to a top 50 status...which with our fan support, facilities, coach and commitment, we should be...then who knows...we may get that X man to take us to another level...We got to be good...then maybe we can get lucky

I'd aim to have more success than CU. Just getting there isn't enough. This program should reach Gonzaga like levels and be a top 30 team every year and get to the NCAA tournament every season.

I'm going to talk about a different "Gene." While the "Gene" mentioned by sck41903, Gene Smithson, brought in A.C., C.L., the X-man, etc., the "Gene" of interest to me, Gene Stephenson, has brought in Joe Carter, etc. (the list is too long to type), 4 trips to the national championship game ('82, '89, '91, '93) and the national title in 1989.

If WSU can have this kind of success in baseball (where we considered losing the super-regional series in 2007 and 2008 as disappointments - while basketball was overjoyed to get to the equivalent place of being one of the Top 16 teams in the NCAA tourney), why not have basketball expectations equivalent to our baseball expectations?

What about KC? He should be ignored. The baseball team is terrible this year but we were one game away from the CWS last year. We hosted a super-regional in 2007. I expect to be back to the CWS before 2015 and I consider this to be a reasonable expectation. Gene said this would be a bad season of Shocker baseball while KC preaches doom and gloom "all the time;" even he can't always be wrong.
Some posts are not visible to me. :peaceful:
Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

When doesn't Gene preach about how his teams have a lot of improvement to be made? If you listen to him each year around Fall Ball, you'd swear the Shox would finish last every season.

I don't preach doom and gloom all the time. Just the majority of the time :D

Unless of course you're all for that one-and-done, let's just make an appearance every few year years, let's underachieve every year kinda stuff.
