Wichita State fans, coaches and players celebrated the 2008-09 men's basketball season in front of more than 350 attendees Thursday evening in the Preferred Health Systems Multipurpose Center in Charles Koch Arena.
Freshman Toure Murry took home the Wichita Eagle Most Valuable Player Award, but it was the absent senior Ramon Clemente who stole the show with a letter explaining his absence.
"Ramon has been given the unique opportunity to play professionally in Puerto Rico," Head Coach Gregg Marshall said. "He's going to class early in the week, along with online classes, and flying back and forth on the weekends to start a professional career. He has assured everyone here, including me, that he will still graduate in May."
...
Sigh... That's sad news about Bret, but not unexpected...
Oh well. It's better that he doesn't throw his mind away on basketball injuries. He's really a bright guy.
OTOH, what am I going to do with my #15 jersey now?
Deep in the heart of couldn't give a crap about college basketball-land and I miss the SHOX.

Ramon sent a letter to the University that Mike Kennedy read on his behalf. It was moving to say the least.
I would say that it moved MK to tears....but I was too busy choking back my own.
Great night.
Other highlights to follow.
The letter certainly made my eyes misty. As Ramon has said before, he is just so eager to be able to take his diploma back to New York to show his high school teachers that he could make something of himself.
It is amazing how he has managed to work things out so he can complete his studies flying back and forth while making a very nice little nest egg to help him get started in his life.
As always, the coaching staff, players, administration and media were all tremendous to visit with. What a great group of young men and what a classy bunch of coaches. Mike, Dave and Sully are all super guys as well.
Talking to HCGM about the future of this team really turned us on. We have been excited, but seeing his eyes light up when he talks about the future can't help but get you excited. When we mentioned watching KM play against Oak Hill Academy, he really lit up.
We can hardly wait for the season to start. HCGM on the other hand is ready for the break. :)
I always enjoy hearing about how much Marshall dislikes Creighton. He talked about the turning point last season against Creighton...mentioned that Dana ran a set play to get an allyoop to put the exclamation point on their game against us. Ramon was begging Marshall for the ball in the last 20 seconds of the game here, but Marshall told the players "DO NOT GIVE RAMON THE BALL"
Someone thought it would be funny to cross out the second "G" on Marshall's place holder. He laughed when he saw it and said the conference keeps sending him crap with one "G".
Nice to hear that Ramon is able to play pro ball, even better that he is able to do it while finishing out his course work. Sad that Bret's playing career ended the way it did. Very happy to hear that the coach is excited about the future of the team. I'll very excited about the future of the team, I'll be even more so if we can land a good SF to help Hatch out until Coy is eligible ( I think some of the current players would work here) and a guard to replace Chamberlain ( again current player will work). Hell, I'm excited it we don't sign anybody! :wsu_posters:

Marty, what was the guy's name they ran the alley oop for?.....P'ab....P'somethingorother......P'un..... ..P'something....
I've been broadcasting games for nearly 30 years and never before have I been as excited for the future and as confident in the leadership of our program than I am right now.
It was fun, as always, talking to a great number of the young men. It would have been nice to see Reggie, AJ, Mantas and of course Ramon. I understand why they weren't able to make it. I also know that at some point in their lives they might regret missing somethings like that.
Sometimes, you only get to go around once, and often times it's too short and you don't realize it until it's too late.
