  • Northern Iowa

Northern Iowa 56, Purdue 61. Looks like the cats gave Purdue all they could handle. It was a closer game than the final score because of fouling at the end.

Not really.. Purdue lead by 10 or so for much of the game. Northern Iowa finally came back and got it to 6 with like 6 minutes left in the 2nd half but it wasn't really enough. It wasn't too impressive IMO

And another Valley team goes one and done.

Weak schedules, poor tourney performance the last two years and people wonder why the Valley gets the run it gets?

Northern Iowa never really felt like a threat while I watched this game. They just couldn't make the shots they needed and Purdue could. My bracket is still intact, but it's too bad I wanted to see them win at least 1 game.

I guess we'll just have to get back to the NCAA and show them how it's done..... :D :good:

That's what I get by just noticing the scoring during the last 5 or 6 minutes of the game. Just assumed it was closer. But still, I doubt Purdue thought it could get even that close.

I watched most of it and UNI hung in there tough..the announcers mentioned often how they wondered how UNI was hanging in there...Score wise they didnt really threaten until the end but they did play very tough and no quit in them...imo

UNI got curb stomped today. The game was over after the first ten minutes. The Purdue players mailed it for most of the second half. Terrible showing for the Valley. Remind me how we are different then the MEAC conference who will also get one team that will in turn get curb stomped like UNI?

a 5 or 6 point loss is a curb stomp? I dont know about street dancers or MTV's best dance crew or anything like that but you go debbie downer

Purdue was ahead by 2 points with 17 seconds remaining.

                    Hardly a curb stomping.

He qualified it by noting the Purdue players were mailing it in at the end. Also, getting it to 2 and getting it to 2 with a chance to tie or take the lead are big differences. All Purdue had to do was make free throws and UNI had no chance.

UNI had an ok comeback but they really looked bad most of the game.

You are right about one thing as I am totally down today about this. I really thought UNI looked awful today and was generally not competitive until the second half when the Purdue players lost their hustle and just went with the flow until they closed it out. This is the one game a year where there is no moral victory for being close. It is win or go home and UNI was out classed bigtime.

Regardless of your interpretation of how Purdue played in the 2nd half, how is a 12-seed losing to a 5-seed by five all that surprising or disappointing?

It seems every year we expect the Valley team(s) to roll into the tournament and beat a higher seeded team. In the last 7-8 years I think the MVC has only been favored in 4 NCAA games (CU, WSU and SIU twice in the same tournament). We're 3-1 in those games, with the only loss by CU. Every other win was gravy and the losses were to be expected.

Dude Purdue plays some of the best defense in the country. they did again today. Yeah Matt Painter the coach happened to responsible for Southern Illinois "in your shorts" defense that resided there up till this year. They kept Koch from touching the ball much. That was the key to victory. Purdue is better than the ranking they have. Northern Iowa has nothing to be ashamed of today. They played the same today as they did all year. No quit. I thought they represented very well. Had they lined up with say Utah or FSU I think things may have been different. Now had they lined up with Illinois and Bruce Weber (another former SIU coach) who is very familiar with Northern Iowa and how they play you may have seen the same result as the Purdue game today. Just my 2 cents.
