  • NIT vs CBI Dollars?

Ignoring the benefits of the NIT being more prestigious than the CBI. Given the option of the two everyone would pick the NIT, for the recruiting benefits, name recognition, possible fund raising efforts, etc.

    Valleytalk thred

Last season, the Missouri Valley Conference had three NIT participants — Creighton, Illinois State and Southern Illinois. Each school played two games in the tournament, and the conference received about $62,000 based on each unit being worth $10,302, Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin said.

The participating school received one-third of a unit from the games it played, with the remaining two-thirds being split among the other nine schools. Each participating school also received one-ninth of the two-thirds split from the games it did not participate in, Elgin said.

All told, the participating school's take from playing two games in the 2008 NIT was $9,610.

Playing one game in the NCAA tournament last season was worth $1.5 million.

Playing 2 games in the NIT last year you received less than $10,000.

    Looking at WSU this year.

    8000 tickets sold $20/ticket = $160,000
Bid to get home game =$ 60,000

    We are standing at $100,000

If we subtract the other expenses and add the concessions we will earn more in the one CBI game then two NIT games.

Do we have to share any of the revenue with visiting team or the MVC? I looked through the MVC hand book on line and it details the revenue sharing for NIT and NCAA games but does not mention the other two post season tourneys.

It seems to be better financially to be in this lesser tourney than in the NIT.

Are we going to receive more money from hosting this CBI game then if we were in the NIT?

I'm not sure, but I think that $9k is a distribution by the NIT on top of any monies the hosting teams made from gate receipts. That then begs the question of whether the NIT takes a portion of that. They obviously get money from ESPN to televise, so I'm guessing that is where most of the distributed funds come from.

I have no idea if the CBI gives a payout like the NCAA and NIT. With no TV contract, it would all have to come from the hosting fees.

I fully understand this is an open discussion board on any trivial matter you can think up but it blows my mind how much free time posters have. Can I buy some off you?

Ok, I read the article the thread on VT refers to. http://omaha.com/index.php?u_page=3924&u_sid=10588460

It looks like the NCAA takes 75% of gate receipts from NIT hosts.

Based on a previous NIT game CU hosted, they need to sell 7500 tickets just to break even after the NCAA takes their chunk. Of course, they also have to pay to rent their arena.

So if we were in the NIT and sold out CKA we would keep around $47,500. (1000 free tickets leaves 9500 paid at $20/ea is $190k. 25% of that is $47.5k)

We'd only need to sell 5500 tickets for the CBI to be a roughly equal payout to the NIT.

But given the choice, I would rather play a game or two in the NIT and hopefully be on TV against better opponents. We can consider the extra CBI $$$ a consolation.

The Qwest Center also collects a percentage for all tickets sold over 11,000. FWIW.

The CBI is "guaranteed" the $60,000 from WSU. Do any of you know if they get a percentage of anything over the $60,000? I wouldn't think WSU would throw money away, so I can only believe that WSU feels we will make some money on this or they wouldn't do it.

I don't know the specifics but I would consider it an investment from a business standpoint.
