  • My Take on the Tournament

The Play: I talked with Dr. Sexton about it Sunday and while I was convinced that there was no way the play could be anything but a farce, he felt like there was no way to honestly dispute it. Then I came home and used the video in one of the other threads and used www.online-stopwatch.com to time it myself. I tried to get it perfect at least 25 times and continued to see anywhere from 1.7 to 2.1 seconds. In other words, I could not prove without doubt that the call was right or wrong. I really believed while watching it live that the play probably took at least 2.5 seconds, but now am convinced that it took significantly less than that. I'm now willing to let it go and just wish the team had played better the 1st 30 minutes. Watch out next year.

The out of bounds play that allowed the 1.9 may have been a little long, but once again, hard to call. There were other times that the clock was not stopped when it should have been or started late.

I was convinced as anyone that there was a conspiricy, but now, I'm not convinced. It may have been simply a poor timekeeper.

I enjoyed our area at the arena. My wife and I sat with our friends Doug and Earlene and near Scott and Michelle who sit near us at Koch as well. We really enjoyed them all as well as the other Shocker fans in our vicinity. There were some good UNI fans in front of us at times and some really loud, enthuiastic Redbirds behind us during the final game. We enjoyed them all. We also ran into a number of other familiar Shocker fans who sat in other areas. Mike Shox and his group were there and had a great time and we enjoyed spending some time with them.

Much was made of the horrible Creighton fans during their loss to ISU. We experienced at least one jerk up close ourselves. However, I have to say that like most similar situations, it was 5% of their fans making them all look bad. I saw far more decent Creighton fans than those who were getting in yelling matches with our fans. It's one of those things that happen in sporting events, especially when alcohol is served. I'd bet that most of the Creighton jerks we saw had taken too much advantage of the beer and felt amazingly brave. I believe that Creighton fans are not a great deal different than any other school. Mostly good fans with some who are total jerks or who cannot handle their booze.

Most important to me is that I truly believe that the Shox will be much more successful in St Louis in the years to come.

Thanks to all the fans who were around us who made it more fun.

You had to love how J.T. took over the game down the stretch and how Toure' had the confidence to take and hit the big three after missing his previous 4 attempts from the 3. It was truly heartbreaking to see Ramon on his knees after the final shot was allowed. Great effort Ramon.

I'm eager to head for St. Louis again next year.

Go watch the videos that have been posted here. It has been proven without a doubt that the shot time was long. These things shouldn't be hard to call with proper video and time keeping equipment and people. Seriously, check out that thread.

What matters is that you had fun, that you represented, and that you go back for what should be more wins next year. In the long run, that game won't mean much. The added fire of WSU vs CU is worth more. You had fun with friends and family, so you win.

Actually, it was the video that was posted here that I used. It's just a matter of being able to see the ball hit Woodfox's hand and starting the clock at just the right instant. I wish I could say one way or another, but honestly I cannot.

Now, if, like Haertl said, the shot was from under the basket so you could really see when the ball made contact with Woodfox, you should be able to make a perfect conclusion. I just could not with the shot from behind Woodfox.

Yes, the important thing is being there and we have been for many years now. As soon as we start home from St. Louis, we start discussing next year and how we will get them in St. Louis finally. We are really looking forward to the next trip. Season tickets when Gene Smithson was here then had to give them up for a time because of finances, but again since Randy's 1st year and St. Louis for the past 10 years. We're darn near broke most of the time mostly because of WSU basketball. We don't have near the income of most people who pay what we do in SASO donations, season tickets, road games, tournaments, and all the other money we spend in support of the team, but it is what we live and breathe.

      Come on October!

        150946,
Very reasonable analysis supported with facts and common sense. However, the conspiracy crowd isn't going to go along and I'm sure it's expected.
The issue with CU fans is accurate, but it's also true that 5% do ruin the party for everyone.
For example, 2 CU idiots in front and to the right of us stood at the start and continued standing 2 minutes into the game. It would be understood if they were in the student section. However, we were in the fourth row.
We asked them to sit down, to which they replied, "Get used to it."
At this point, we informed them to either sit down or we would provide assistance.
Just then, an older CU fan turned around and said, "They're with us and we'll take care of them. If they give you anymore trouble, just let us know."

Not all CU fans are bad, just the drunken minority. 8)
Above all, make the right call.

Wouldn't say they are drunken minorities, more like the majority.

There is a problem with basketball clocks. They time down to tenths of a second, but it is virtually impossible for a human to be accurate to a tenth of a second. Being accurate to 1/5 of a second is a challenge.

Drummers can do it, but they're working off of a rhythm, instead of reacting to unknown timing. A smoking hot guitar player can hit 10 notes per second. Listen to the hottest guitar lick you've ever heard and imagine how tough it would be to tap your finger at the precise moment any note is hit when you don't know in advance which note you're supposed to use for your tap.

It doesn't matter what human controls the clock. Plus or minus .2 seconds is about the limit of accuracy of a human response. That creates a .4 second range of timing accuracy and it's possibly the best that can be consistently maintained.

Just because the clock is in tenths of a second is no indication that it's humanly possible to be that accurate.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Now there's a fan that I like. Well done! More fans like that, less ones in blue striped overalls.

The easiest way to counter act this is with a button on the ref's person that he pushes. None of this see, drop the arm, someone else pushes a button middle ages stupidity.

Thanks to our brain's advanced prediction algorithms (the same ones that allow us to catch a pop fly, which is a very complicated math problem that we handle as children almost instinctively) a human can push a button within 1/10th of a second of contact of an incoming inbound pass.

That is one of two things I want to see happen as a result of this*. I want to see a switch to the refs starting the clock. I also want to see the MVC admit an error so that the two post season tourneys we have a slim chance with know the truth.

                * CU losing to Ill St already happened so I guess I wanted 3 things.

So...if a clock operator can't even push the button on time, then how can a player, say Woodfox, catch the ball, fumble, dribble, dribble, shoot in 1.9. I'm with Marshall.

                    Clock

Too bad Woodfox wasn't on the sidelines running the clock -- that would have solved all the problems.

                      Doc,
To take it a bit farther, we asked the same guy his opinion of Dana. We expected the usual "He is the Gawd of Omaha."
Talk about being surprised by a response.
He went on a tirade about how Dana is now recruiting thugs (hard to argue) and his overall arrogance is rubbing a large contingent wrong in Omaha.
He went on about how they hoped he would have stayed in Arkansas and how disappointed they were when he changed his mind.

It appears the love affair isn't quite as mutual as once thought. 8)
