  • Sexton: Why the Silence?

I'm growing a little concerned about the seemingly lack of support given by WSU AD Sexton towards HCGM re the clock incident.
-- Sexton reviews the tape and agrees with the call
-- Sexton does not make any statement re questionable clock operator errors
-- Sexton allows HCGM to make the case in support of a bad call rather than him carrying that load

I believe Sexton should be fighting this battle rather than Gregg.
At least he should be coming out with a statement indicating he will review the tapes along with Gregg and together make a statement.

I don't live in Wichita and don't know all of the great things that Mr. Sexton might be doing for WSU athletics. But, what exactly is he doing? What's his vision, game plan, etc... Is he a "hands on" type of AD, or just kind of a "stay under the radar" kind of leader?

Some of you more familiar with the inner-workings of college athletics can provide better input. But isn't the game clock situation an example that HCGM and Sexton be in total agreement and speak with one voice and that voice being the AD rather than the coach?

Unless there is something around the corner in which I'm not privy, I would have to write that I'm disappointed with how Sexton has handled this incident.

Perhaps he realizes that it is futile to do anything more. The 'man' (Elgin) is not going to give us the victory and we all know that bitching at the 'man' will only make the 'man' screw us more in the future.

Boring.....coaches aren't going to get officials to change a call ever. Yet, for some reason coaches continue to talk to officials and gripe.

Things just might be a little more involved than you are capable of understanding.

Perhaps, but one would think that the WSU AD could try to turn a negative into a positive and perhaps lobby for more of an automatic clock management system in contrast to the manual one used at the Valley Tournament.
Additionally, if Sexton doesn't want to upset the boat with this incident, why does he continue to allow Gregg to make comments to the media? All-in-all, the AD and coach should act as one in these situations and thus far that does not seem to be the case.

Sexton imo is not off to an impressive start as our AD. Unless he comes out and shows some congruencies with HCGM over this incident, this could very well be the starting point of many more concerning things to come with the Shocker athletic program being managed by Mr. Sexton.

I hope that Mr. Sexton will come out and say something to support his Gregg's concern over this incident.

Having just returned from St. Louis I would like to give my observations of Mr Sexton, who I had not met prior to this weekend. He was everywhere in St Louis where their were Shocker fans. He was at the hotel on Thursday personally greeting and thanking Shocker fans for their support and for making the trip. He came to the Shocker sections at the games both Thursday and Friday, again stopping to talk to everyone and thanking us for our support. He was with us after the game on Thursday night and again could not have been more supoportive and approachable. Former AD's have taken time mostly for the high rollers but Mr Sexton was with all of us.
On the wqy back to the hotel late on Friday night we ran into him with his wife standing on the street by themselves. He had just returned from reviewing the video with Elgin and the MVC officials. He could not have been anymore despondent or disappointed than any Shocker fan. He said from the video evidence he saw, much to his dismay,t was probably the correct call and certainly nothing we could have any chance of overturning.
We could not possibly find an AD who bleeds Back and Gold the way Eric Sexton does. He has my full support.

I bet what he saw in the truck did make it look like it was a good shot because he was seeing the production shots.

Also, the man has been out shaking hands at every single baseball game so far. I don't ever remember seeing the AD until it was at least above freezing!

I'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks, Haweye, for a great defense of ES. Eric comes from the political side of academia and one thing he has learned is that picking a fight you have no chance of winning does no good. He has to be AD for every sport and he is still trying to establish himself as a D1 AD. He handled the situation just fine and I guarantee you GM knows privately that he has the support of his boss. I don't want to hear any more cheap crap about a great AD.

Veritas, you act as if Sexton is doing nothing with the situation, and you have no idea what he might be doing behind the scenes, which is exactly where an A.D. ought to be dealing with those in power. I am quite confident Mr. Sexton was very convincing with Mr. Elgin while in the truck and the entire weekend about his thoughts on the situation. I can tell you this, an A.D. should NOT, in any circumstance, fight this battle in the press, that will get him no where. We all like those guys that stomp their feet and throw a fit and act like a five year old, but those type of folks never get anywhere. Sexton handled this situation the only way he could to try and benefit the entire athletic department in the future.

I also saw Sexton at the OSU baseball Regional shaking hands with the Shocker Faithful. His father was a heck of a Shocker athlete so I'm sure he bleeds Shocker blood. No doubt there. My criticism might be a little harsh as he has not been in his position too long.
HOWEVER..... Gregg seems to be out there on his own, and as a fan a bit frustrated with the call, I would like the AD to use his savy political insight and knowledge to get our point across and publicly support his coach.
A lot of you might be right on target in that he is working behind the scenes to articulate our frustration with a measured response. I sure hope so.

And Fredster--- Not taking a cheap shot. We hear from Lutz, we hear from Gregg, we hear nothing from Mr. Sexton except that apparently it was the right call.
It's his obligation and duty to either publicly stick up for his employee, or tell his employee to put a muzzle on it. I guess he could use Gregg as a mouthpiece, but don't think that's the case.

I hope I'm wrong and I might be a little early, but sorry.... Sexton has dropped the ball on this one. A friendly back-slapping hand-shaking AD is good as long as he's strong, supportive, and USES his political insight and strength to support his programs. I guess we shall see...

GorHoops stated exactly how I feel about the whole situation. Sexton could very easily be doing a lot of things behind closed doors and Marshall knows Sexton is doing it, and fighting the battle with Marshall. Calling out Elgin, officials, the MVC, etc; in public, will accomplish absolutely nothing.

I really love Gregg Marshall's passion and enthusiasm. However, I think he should now take a lesson from Eric.

You know, I don't think us fans need any more fuel to add to this fire, so Gregg or Eric saying things publicly will only incite the ire of Elgin for future reference.

However, if they are presenting him with their case behind closed doors, and keeping it quiet publicly, it may really improve their respect level, and may help down the road when we need support for something. (oh, say, a beneficial Valley schedule, where we don't have to play SIU or CU on their senior night)

We know enough to know this situation at its very best is a great buzzer beater, and at its worst a conspiracy to keep Creighton in the NCAA tournament. I really feel it falls somewhere in between, but that's not something that will ever be answered to our public satisfaction, I am sure. If GG and ES can get Elgin on their side privately, it could provide for some very good clout in the future.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Ah yes, this coming from a man who raised the hopes of countless SN posters regarding the Shocker football thread. Perhaps you should have been a little more involved in your own train of thought before you went along with that tasteless prank. Thank goodness I never drank the kool-aide on that one.

I have not been here recently but I have a comment. I think it was a mistake for Eric Sexton to agree to go into the TV truck and review the tape. Eric is not a video expert nor did he have all of the evidence (e.g. video from other angles). I could not care less about Lutz but the AD put himself, Gregg and WSU in an awkward position. I wish he had declined to go into the TV truck; at a minimum, Gregg should have been with him. ES implicitly gave his imprimatur to the officials' decisions.
