Stats on Broadcast

Ok i realize we have talked about this before about the poor quality of the broadcasts. And i havent really been one to complain because I am happy we get to watch the games. But a couple of instances threw me off tonight.

First and the big one. If I am not mistaken when they were showing the coaches information right before the game got started they had marshall's career record at WSU at 24 and 23 or something like that. What do we only count wins now for overall record? A .500 record going into a game would not jump us over 9 games below .500 unless my math skills have left me.

And the other instance which the more i think about it i might have been imagining things but i swear ramon at one point was shooting a free throw and it showed he had 12 points. I believe he missed the free throw. and then the next couple of possessions was when he had the 3 point play and then the shot off the backboard which would be 5 more points but yet they were only giving him 15.

Just little things but little things in my book are what make a quality broadcast. And these are things that are easily within their realm of control

How about them showing the Valley standings but then saying they did not include the the game played earlier in the week?

The thing that drives me craziest is when Craig is talking about a play that happened on one end of the floor, and he's still talking about it after a significant play has happened on the other end of the floor. Bruce will have to sit there and wait 20 seconds to say the Shockers had scored as he waits for Craig to quit talking about the defensive position two trips ago.

it doesnt help that our own announcers can even get our own players names right.

bottom line the wichita state broadcasts are piss poor.

The quality of picture is horrendus. And Metro doesnt do that much better for KU games on channel 5 or whatever.

The announcing is sub par and thats being nice. Haertl spends half the time sucking off the other player. And craig is on their talking about god knows what. He keeps saying "when I played" Look Craig to be honest when you played you didnt do a damn thing.

i dont really see WSU doing anything to get rid of them. Wichita is pretty big on the "good Ol boy" network. Both persons are alumns and one of parties family happen to be big boosters of the program.

At this point I would rather have Bob Davis & Joe Buck call our games. But until our local media decides to take WSU athletics for more than just filler its what we have to put up with.

Dollars dictate everything in broadcast media. Fact - a local market the size of Wichita just doesn't command the ad $$$ that a big market local, regional or national broadcast does. They can't pay the commentators or production company like the big-time networks do. How many TVs are tuned to the games on Now 22? Maybe 4,000? 7,000? 10,000?

If an individual play-by-play or color guy is good, he can work his way up the food chain into a better paying job, i.e. FSN, ESPN, etc. Bruce Haertl has been in Wichita for decades for a reason.

Now, how Charlie Spoonhour works at FSN defies this, but in general that's what happens.

So, is that a possibility? To go with no commentators, and just let the tape roll. Put up some stats every once in awhile, but just give us the band and crowd noise.

I still say we just run the radio broadcast with the video. Kennedy is the best and it would be much better than what we have. Honestly, who doesn't try and do that anyway?

Yeah you know its bad when Bruce will tell you the two officials names that made a call but not what the call was or who it was on. Freaking pathetic. I used to defend Bruce as well but i swear to god if I hear him say that's just good stuff one more freaking time I'm going to kill myself.

I don't mind Craig at all. At least he talks about what WSU is doing and makes some damn sense and doesn't live on cliches like Bruce does. ASM is right about Bruces love affair with our opponents. I don't expect him to be a total homer or not point out nice plays or how good players are from an opponent but damn he goes so far overboard its retarded.

Yeah Craig goes on to long sometimes but at least its on subject and relative to the game and the strategy taking place most of the time. I can live with that. Bruce on the other hand... makes me want to do very bad things after just 3 minutes!!!

Bruce has horrible play-by-play skills, and Craig "hamburger boy" Stevens is a horrible color guy. Normally the color commentator has some personality, and some humor. He just babbles on about "when I played" bs. It's like I want to say "Listen Craig, you played on the team when you did because your parents are huge boosters. Everyone grumbled when you went in."
