Basketball Officials' Pay - Help Shocker Ref and Sub

The amount of games they work is over blown. Most of these guys are in pretty good shape and can handle the work load given. There is the mental aspect that could be a problem from time to time with some but I think the whole thing is being made a bigger deal than it should be by some. Even Kennedy talked about how he doesn't think it's an issue.

2 hours of work with a 15 minute break in the middle would be a nice work day.

There is one heck of lot more work going on than "2 hours of work with a 15 minute break in the middle." Trust me, it's an 8 hour deal on site and there's the travel time involved too. 8)

Agreed. The travel time is a killer. Most NCAA officials have other jobs. Hightower is a superintendent at a school district in Illinois. A nice extra paycheck a few nights a week.

The refs have a lot of expenses and fees. When it's all said and done, it isn't as pretty as the financial picture ShockRef painted.

They're refs for cryin' out loud... lmao.

RDR, the interweb suggests that NFL refs make between forty and 120 thousand per season. As Teresa probably knows, most also have other jobs.

I don't go for the 8 hour work day for refs. I could maybe see 4 hours tops.
Even with the traveling time (say 6 hours both ways) that is still about
$113 an hour (and I don't consider traveling to be work).

I could stand a few boos for $113 an hour, and working 2 days a week.

That doesn't seem like enough money to me.

Over at bbstate.com they have tons of data on refs. Look at John Higgins' schedule. By the time he flies from Waco to Peoria and stays in a hotel and eats a few meals, that's a huge chunk of his pay right there.

The worst part is that most of these games are in hard to get to places. You either have to take several planes or some combination of driving/flying. When he's doing back to back to back to back games, he's probably working more than 8-hour days when you count travel.

Imagine how much time it takes just to book all this travel. That's an insane amount of logistics.

Yep, it isn't a very sweet deal at all. When it's all said and done, the travelling expenses are taking a huge chunk of their change.
