If Marshall had calmly walked down the tunnel with the crowd still on its feet and cheering, I'd be disappointed.

That would be like a baseball player who hit a walk-off in a critical game, the crowd called for an appearance, and the player didn't step out of the dugout.

That's an insult to the crowd.
      Exactly.

The sports media take themselves and the games they cover far too seriously. Sports are an outlet for emotion for most fans. Where else can you be and scream your brains out like an idiot and fit right in? If you did it on the street or in the office, they'd probably haul you away to a padded cell. The games are supposed to be fun for the fans, players, and coaches. Sure the business side of things is important, but if sports weren't fun and entertaining, no one would go.

Jeffrey, get out and have some fun, dude.

Last thing on Parsons ... KWCH pulled him in for HS football coverage this year on Fridays. His prepared pieces were brutal to hear - his journalistic training don't translate AT ALL to TV sports coverage.

I like Lutz' take on this one. Marshall is our emotional leader right now. There was a long stretch just a couple weeks ago that wasn't fun for him or his team. A 3 game winning streak and a come-from-behind win demands some release and I loved it.

Even though I really don’t have a big problem with Jeffery Parsons giving his opinion ‘publicly’, I still wonder what inspired him to come up with something like this for his ‘Parting Shot?’ One must ass/u/me that it was a slow sports week for worthy sports topics. Jeffery tried his best to defend himself on 1410 this morning. He knew that Shocker fans wouldn’t take kindly to his comments and he basically said he didn’t care. Terrell disagreed with Jeffery and mentioned the 3 page thread on Shockernet concerning the subject. Parsons laughed it off and said, “You just had to have been at the game to see how Marshall acted….”

Parsons then mentioned again (I have heard him praise Marshall in the past) how much he likes coach Marshall and thinks he’s a great coach. He even mentioned that he thought Marshall was the next ‘great coach’ to hit the national scene after he had heard him speak in a press conference in Greensboro in 2006. He said he called his wife and told her that he had just heard the next rising coaching star… for those comments; I’m willing to cut him a little slack. However he should have stopped there, but went on to say that Marshall should be at a BCS job and is still ‘shocked’ that WSU was able to hire him. Honestly, I was also ‘shocked’ when Marshall was hired, but after attending the recent home stand, I’m much less ‘shocked’ and actually think Gregg Marshall is EXACTLY the kind of coach we need. Why shoot low for an up and coming coach when we have so much to sell? I don’t always agree with Cold, ISASO and others, but they don’t see WSU as a stepping stone to anyone. I’ve followed Shocker basketball for over 40 years and I’m finally starting to see the light. Why do many of us (including the media) feel that we’re a second class institution and there’s always something better? Probably because it’s just the way people from Wichita think.

It’s utterly inexcusable what happened to WSU basketball in the 90’s. It was an embarrassment to dedicated Shocker fans everywhere. Sure, we might be stuck in an upper-mid-level top 10 conference; however why can’t we be a perennial top 20 BCS ‘type’ program from the Valley? Is this too much to ask for considering our loyal fan base, history and facilities? I watch a lot of college basketball and our atmosphere stacks up with the very best I’ve seen… there’s absolutely nothing mid-level about what we have.

Back to Parsons, IMO he dug himself even deeper with Shocker fans by emphasizing that Marshall is just too good for WSU. Again, that’s his prerogative to express his opinion, but I’m not sure he’s using his noggin’ living in the middle of Shocker country. I apologize to Jeffery if I’m incorrect here… Parsons is either a KU grad or attended KU at one time in the past (not sure where the K-State references came from?). If this is true, I’m willing to give him his second ‘mulligan’. Honestly, if you’ve ever spent much time there (Lawrence), anything not related to KU is often looked down on… that’s just the way it is when you’ve been brain-washed in Lawrence. You can take an average ‘Joe’ and after one semester in Lawrence he will be completely brain-washed and begin to see the world much differently. As a new KU T-shirt proclaims, “Lawrence Kansas, Where JESUS would have played basketball.” No, I don’t have any animosity towards KU… I’ve spent literally thousands upon thousands of dollars there over the years. I usually take KU fans with a ‘grain of salt’ because I know deep down they cannot help themselves no matter how hard they try.

Unlike many of you, I actually enjoy Jeffery Parsons and Sports Sunday… in fact, seldom do I miss it.

I’m sorry to beat a ‘dead horse’ and bring this thread back to the top, but I felt this was worth sharing… it’s probably time for me to take a vacation from Shockernet.

Does he, or anyone here, realize that Marshall TURNED DOWN A BCS JOB (South Florida - Big East) that paid as much or more than WSU before taking the position at WSU. Apparently Cold, ISASO and the others aren't the only ones that don't view WSU as a stepping stone to the BCS.

Hey NEWSFLASH, its not a NEWSFLASH that many many more than Cold and ISASO do not, should not and have never considered WSU a stepping stone. And no offense, but if you have followed Shocker basketball for 40 years before this epiphany then you might want to trade in that 386 in your noggin for something like a Pentium XXX. Nevertheless, glad you can now be part of the solution instead of part of the problem. You are either with us or against us and an apologist in the ranks can be our worst enemy. But if you still enjoy Jeffrey %$#& after that pathetic comment I am still wondering how fast your synapse is firing.

Just like I told my brother. He said he got caught up in the moment, plus he was thanking the fans for what they do. He and the team knows how important we are to them. There are only a handfull of teams in the country that have fans like us. And he knows it! I personally am glad we have a real person for a coach rather than a plastic one.

I didnt get to go to the game because i had to work. damn work. but i did listen to the game and you should have seen me explode when murry's shot went on. so i can imagine marshals reaction. since then i have been asking people what happened and everyone said it wasnt near as bad as parsons made it out to be. and tonight i caught part of the shocker report and it showed a clip of this incident. marshal was just extremely pumped. They showed his face and when he picked up Sexton i got pumped up again. I absolutely love this intensity. i only wish i had been there and that my seats were not behind the bench so i could see marshal's intensity even more!

I want Jeffrey to part with as much money as I, and many others have, over the past 20 years on season tickets.
Then, I want him to part with the time, frustration, stress we all have invested for however many years we've been going to games.
Then, I want him to go through the c-r-a-p Marshall's had to deal with, starting with Guy's death.

Then, and only then, can he criticize the enthusiasm anyone shows after an emotional win.

Seeing as Parsons works for a Wichita media company and nearly everyone else in the local media disagrees with him, it might be time for him to polish up the ol' resume for one of those high paying jobs in journalism up in Jayhawks country. Then he defends what he said? Priceless. He is an idiot.

I'm pretty sure that Parsons went to WSU. I remember him writing articles for the Sunflower.

This would have been probably 94-97?

So, his tenure as the Sunflower "sports editor" was colored by the bad basketball being played in the Roundhouse. I was frankly surprised when he was picked up by the Eagle.

Jeffrey was on KGSO yesterday. Terrell took up against him. They mentioned a 3-4 page thread on Shockernet.

Jeffrey, imho, aquitted himself well I thought. He took the criticism well. He did mention that anyone that wished to discuss with him could come down and say hi at the next home game.

He also said that none of what he had heard was nearly as bad as what he got from KSU fans when he didn't put Darren Sproles on his ballot.

While I obviously disagree with his comments, he is entitled to his opinion. What I really don't like is his continuing "NO ONE is bigger Gregg Marshall fan than me" stance....that really annoys me. There are and one of the reasons he thinks that is that he thinks GM is too good for WSU.

                              That irks me.

Putting a nasty, negative and deflating spin on a joyous and positive event is called "journalistic integrity." Where is that brazen, devil-may-care attitude when examining that raving lunatic in Manhattan? Martin is a walking cartoon character.

The Wichita State job is a very good one. The pay is good, the fan base is second to none, the conference ranges from top 5 to top 10. The city is, despite what ignorant Wichitans think, one of the best all around places to live in the country (See Money Magazine, Forbes, et al).

Would you rather live in Manhattan, KS? Get a list together of shopping, dining and entertainment events there. Manhattan has university events...that's it.

Look at seating and attendance for many "big name" college jobs. Not what you would think. Gyms not as nice as what Andover Central plays in. I was at the KU/TAM game....Allen is tradition rich and a great environment, but honestly, pretty ratty as a building. There is no real concourse. No windows. Looks like an industrial warehouse/basement.

Wichita lives, eats and breathes Shocker Basketball---but does so patiently and fondly. A rare combination.
