  • Casey Crawford did hit the jackpot!

The KC-area product who scorned WSU so he could fulfill his destiny at a big-time school is now at...

Colorado. The Big-Time Buffalos. Those Big-Time Buffs who draw about 2K per game.

Congrats. In the first half against K-State, a team with little inside presence, he had more fouls than points. Zero points to be precise.

When I first saw him at Koch I thought he looked like Raef LaFrentz. That's got to be worth something right?

Is Colorado really only averaging a couple thousand a game?

Regardless, Crawfish still gets to pretend to be big-time travelling throughout the Big 12 and laying eggs in all the arenas.

I look like Albert Einstein. I haven't found that to be worth much.

In an OT game that KSU won 77-75, Crawford had 11 minutes, 0 pts, 0 boards, 2 steal, 2 blocks, 1 TO, and 2 fouls.

I'm not that upset that Crawford didn't sign with WSU. If he had, we never would have been able to sign Arbry Butler.

Wait - somehow that logic isn't working out well.

From Feb 21 Boulder Daily Camera--

Casey Crawford was supposed to be a Big 12 newcomer of the year candidate and a real difference-maker for Colorado this season.

But the transfer from Wake Forest has had a very disappointing season for the Buffs and hasn’t even played in four of the last five games.

Colorado mustered up 6600 to watch Mizzou lay a beat down.

The gentleman formerly known as Mr. Crawford, as he has requested to be addressed now, did not play.

              Thoughts on Crawford

              Posted February 24, 2009

Maybe the most perplexing issue of the season for the Colorado basketball team has been the play -- or more aptly, the lack thereof -- of sophomore Casey Crawford.

The transfer from Wake Forest was supposed to be the Buffs' difference-maker this year. All last season, CU's coaching staff touted Crawford's abilities. The general feeling was that he'd be a big presence for the Buffs this season, both as a force in the paint and as a 3-point threat.

But Crawford has been swallowed by CU's bench. He has not logged a single minute of playing time in five of CU's last six games. In the one game in which he did appear, he had zero points, zero rebounds and a turnover in seven minutes against Iowa State.

CU coach Jeff Bzdelik says Crawford must put some effort into defense and rebounding. Bzdelik says players who display that kind of work ethic in practice will get the chance to show their stuff in games.

Crawford shrugs his shoulders and says he's doing his best.

Here's my guess: Bzdelik is making an example of Crawford, and isn't about to waver. When the head coach says players who don't work hard in practice, who don't put effort into the "dirty work" won't see game time, he means it. I'm betting Bzdelik believes that if he gives in, it might come back to haunt him in the future when other players balk.

It's a fine line to walk. No doubt, the Buffs could have used a few of Crawford's 3-pointers this year -- but would his defensive liabilities have negated those extra points? Hard to say.

I've seen other coaches do the same thing to high-profile players. In Dan Hawkins' first year in Boulder, he and linebacker Thad Washington didn't see eye-to-eye on a few things -- and Washington found himself on the sidelines at the beginning of a few games. It might not have helped the Buffs at the time, but the message was clearly delivered to every other player on the team.

How this all shakes out with Crawford will be interesting to watch. As he's already transferred once, I'd hate to see him give it up here and go somewhere else again.

What's not up for debate is that Crawford has plenty of talent. I'd love to see Bzdelik give him a clean slate for next year -- and for Crawford to take full advantage. It would be the best thing for all parties involved.

Just think, if Crawford can't get motivated to play in the "big time" at Colorado, how downtrodden would his attitude have been at a piss poor, small-time basketball school like Wichita State?

Let it go folks. Time to move on there are a lot of positives to focus on and be thankful for, including the lack of Mr. Crawford on our current team.

It's amazing... with Crawfish supposedly such a bust at Wake Forest, why would people still say this?

The transfer from Wake Forest was supposed to be the Buffs' difference-maker this year.
If he isn't very talented, why would anybody think he would be a "difference maker" in the Big 12?

I think what Crawfish needed was the right coach to "get through to him". Imagine a J.T. Durley not "getting" the right coach. He probably wouldn't even be playing basketball anymore. I submit that if GG could get lazy Durley to play hard, he could have gotten Crawfish to play hard as well. However, that was a different time and a different recruiting year. Crawfish either needs to wake up or he is going to have a lot of "woulda, coulda, shoulda," memories.

Not sure what post undergrad aspirations he had, but if nothing else, there's a lot worse places to spend a few years than Boulder.

This is why a cancer like Crawfish is not needed or welcomed on the Shox team. I don't care how much "talent" he has (personally I've never been impressed), with an attitude like this, he would never sniff the court on any good coaches team. He seems like a prima donna who thinks because he had a successful high school career, the coaches should automatically pencil him in.
