  • Fan Etiquette Dilemma: Standing

Background: I am in about the 20ish row or so. I get along with all the fans in my area. I don't know any of the fans behind me though.

I am the type of guy that would like to stand and cheer the _entire_ game. Obviously, that is over the top unless you are in the student section.

When people in front of me stand, and they are the only ones standing, the 50 year-old+ crowd starts bitching (and I would say the average fan is over 50).

I really, really want to stand the last 5 minutes of each half badly. But I don't because I don't want to disrespect the elders or piss off the younger fans. But I don't just want to sit there and watch our team losing by 10 without some fan support. And if we are winning I want to help remind them to finish each half strongly.

The only time I have seen our crowd stand for an entire 4 minute period was at a few heated NIT matches and against Bradley this year when we were losing by 10 and the coach prompted us to stand. It worked too, because we only lost by a last second shot that left us down by 2 with 0.09 seconds to go.

I want to stand those last 5 minutes SOOOO bad. Why can't I? Why don't people get into the end-game of each half like they tend to at other venues? We have a great crowd in terms of the numbers, but what about actually getting on our feet, and not sitting at every slight error or bad break?

    Protocol? Etiquette? What to do?

    Stand when everyone stands.
Stand when there is a sense of urgency or excitement.
Stand when a very good play happens.
Stand when the refs just blew a call and you have to let em know about it.

If any other time you wish to stand, you should probably be in the student section. While I wish our crowd could stand for the whole game, the majority of the game, of part of the game, it's not possible. Here or anywhere.

I do hope there's a lot of standing and yelling today though. That would be a good sign..

I'm in my 60's and while I don't stand the whole game, I do stand quite a lot when nobody else in my section is standing. Most of the fans behind me are younger than me. I guess if they don't like it, then can complain and I'll very likely ignore them. If there was someone behind me who was older or who had a phisical problem that could keep them from standing, I'd probably be more considerate.

On the subject of standing: some students have a bad habit of getting pissed at people in the student section for not standing. I could ignore this until the more belligerent students tried to get me to ask a total stranger to stand, and told me to tell my girlfriend with a hurt knee to stand. Basically, what I'm trying to say is, not everybody can sit or stand the whole game, so don't get pissed at the person around you who decides to break the norm. Would it be cool to see all 10,000 fans rocking the Chuck on their feet? Yes. Will it ever happen? No.

That needs to sustain itself for the rest of the season.. regardless of our issues.

Sure was. Funny how a well played game vs a hated opponent can have that effect.

Shocks never allowed CU to take the crowd out of the game.

The Shocker crowd sure looks great; especially when contrasted to such teams as Drake and their Nap Center.
                  Nice going Shox fans!

Well I'm 61 and I stood for about half the game. Being a fan means you do not sit there passively for most of the game. You get up on your hind legs and cheer, razz the refs and boo the other team. If you don't like it too bad, get some other seats. The young men playing the game need our vocal and physical support and by God I will give it to them. If that offends you tough cookies.

I don't have many issues with the people around me. Accept for the loud mouth moron who is somewhere around Sec. 118 Row 27/28 Seat 7-12. Learn the game or SHUT UP!!! You should see the looks on the faces around me when this guy gets going. He has little to no understanding of the game.

I think my area does a pretty good job of when and when not to stand. I haven't heard any complaints when I jump up out of my seat. Not yet anyway.

Sure you don't mean Sect 115? I have a guy that gets way, way too intense. Everything is "OH COME ON!" We will inbound the ball and he instantly starts yelling "GET UP THE COURT!" He drives me nuts.

Anyways, one of the few pros of my top row seat is I can sit, stand, pace, and do whatever. When I steal seats up front I hate feeling like I have to sit down.

I've never fully understood the fans at the Chuck. On one hand we will pack the house for a team with no wins in the conference. The old folks are out there. They make their donations. They buy the tickets. So forth and so on.

But they can't be bothered to put on the free tshirt or just wear black in the first place?

                        That bothers me.

I'm in the 50+ group and I sit in GA. I try to get just behind where it's student dominated. I stand because that's the only way to see what's happening along the north end line. I stand a lot. I yell a lot. I like GA.

I sat too low one game. Had a great view of the action on the north end, but putting my arm around a 20-year-old guy during "Alma Mater" was something neither of us probably wanted to do.

I can get way better seats in GA than I could if I had season tickets. If I was requested not to stand and yell from a season ticket seat, that would remove a lot of the experience of a WSU basketball game.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

I wish this thread was titled, "Fan etiquette dilemma: Sitting."

A few years back I took my 95 year old grandfather to a game for his birthday. He has the usual 95 year old ailments - bad knees, back, bad everything. He walks with a walker, etc. He stood for the entire game. I think it can be done by just about everyone.
