He may very well red-shirt in baseball this year, but I don't believe it's because he has to. He was not on a baseball scholarship at ASU and never offically played ball there. Besides, I'm not sure, does a baseball transfer have to sit out a year?

I know he can't play this season, but maybe just practicing with the team will somehow rejuvenate them.Marge: The plant called and said that if you don't come in tomorrow, don't bother coming in Monday.
Homer: WOOHOO! Four day weekend.

Now!
Personally, I hope Coy can and does play baseball this year.
A guy who came in as a 7th round draft choice and was reportedly offered higher-round money to sign, why spent the fall practicing at Arizona State, isn't going to be a four year baseball player anyway. So the Shocks might as well get him underway and enjoy as much play from him as possible, while they can. It won't affect his basketball one way or the other.
Besides, this year more than most, the baseball team looks like it could use the help.

Details of Coy's transfer to WSU are developing. He can practice with the basketball team. He said he may explore playing for the baseball team this spring, something he believes may be possible because he was not on baseball scholarship at Arizona State.
So give Coy a call and tell him it doesn't make any difference. I would imagine he has a pretty good grasp on all of this seeing how much research and time his family took to make a decision. Not saying you are not correct just saying that I got this from the paper rather that just making it up in my head.
