I really wish Title IX were overturned. What a horrible situation that flies directly in the face of basic economics.

If Title IX were gone, 90% of the Universities across the nation would instantly become more financially secure. Every student in every somewhat-major college would get to enjoy football and a few girls who were playing to empty stadiums would have to pay their way to college.. boo hoo...

      Football and men's basketball finance MEN's and WOMEN's sports. Men's tennis. Men's golf. Men's swimming. Men's soccer. Men's gymnastics. Men's baseball.
You to forgot place an "ALL" in front of Women's sports. No need to thank me as I'm here to help. But I do want to thank you. Thank you very much for confirming my initial point. 8)

This is all probably a mute point because Title IX is probably not going away anytime soon.

However, if we did let the marketplace and economics determine which sports are fielded what would WSU have? Basketball and Baseball. Still doubtful whether or not Football at WSU could be self-supporting, although, I have no problem with letting the marketplace determine that.

I guess the Bowling program would continue since it is apparently self supporting now and not part of the Athletic Department.

Would a free market environment favor the Big Boys even more than the currrent structure? Hard to predict, but it may very well have that result.

Right now we have what we have, right or wrong. Good or bad. I plan on supporting the Shocks as best I can in all endeavors. After all, any support given to the minor sports is a direct benefit to the sports that pay the freight in that every dollar of support for the minor sports reduces the budget burden on the Bell Cows. Anything that helps the Bell Cows is a positive in the current structure of College Athletics.

Plenty of schools have profitable football programs, operate athletic departments in the black, and are fully compliant with Title IX.

How do you define "plenty"? It see the definition works when your school is included...

"Plenty" more would be able to afford it if they weren't strapped with this socialistic garbage.

So you're of the opinion that all non-profitable sports programs should be canceled? Or only women's? Is men's tennis more valuable and worthwhile than women's tennis?

While I think Title IX has gone too far, I have to largely agree with Charlie. You can't justify keeping the non-revenue men's sports just because another men's sport can subsidize it.

I don't agree that Title IX has gone too far. Women who get athletic scholarships are often highly intelligent and highly motivated; they will make great alums and may make important contributions (financial, intellectual, recruiting, etc.) to WSU someday.

                    Gawd I love liberals.
They are the first to point fingers and raise 10K dollars of hell when things don't go to their liking. However, when it comes time to fund their 'allegations of impropriety' poof... they disappear. In other words, when it's time to 'reach into those jeans and pull out those greens', you can't find them with a search warrant.
You can also thank them for the BCS crap we deal with every year come the end of college football. Instead of having a playoff system that would actually determine a champion (as they do in every other division) we are force-fed the BCS. But you can't blame the college presidents, who are held hostgage by the guaranteed money the BCS provides. Money, they HAVE to receive to comply with... our little equal opportunity for all edict, Title IX.
To think Cold and I are basically on the same page with this issue is scary enough. 8)

Without either defending or defaming Title IX (because I see both benefits and inequities in it), I do wonder why any university would consciously make determinations about academics or athletics primarily on the basis of "profit or loss." While budgetary issues are an unavoidable fact of life in most areas of human existence (universities included), it seems clear that the purpose of a university and its programs is not to make a profit but to accomplish a mission. That is why universities are subsidized institutions. We pay for them largely out of our taxes (or in the case of private universities out of a combination of private donations and federal support) precisely because they are not really intended to be money-making institutions but service institutions. In a perfect world, the university exists to educate and enrich its students and its community. We don't live in a perfect world but it is certainly not unrealistic to ask a university to at least attempt to decide on the basis of usefulness rather than profit. Whether the issue is holding a literature class or fielding a tennis team, the issue is not primarily whether it will make money but whether it is the best thing we can offer among competing priorities first for the student body and then for the community at large.

Title IX has not been concerned about profit and loss, which is my opinion, is a good thing. It has opened up opportunities that have often benefited both students and communities. On the other hand, it has removed choice-making from the individual universities and forced a one-size fits all mandate from the government. That is almost never a good thing because it assumes that someone from the outside knows what is best for every university's students and community. It is unclear that the ends of Title IX justifies the means.

At the end of the day, classes, research, the arts, and sports in a university do not exist either for profit or for their own ends, but rather for the purpose of producing an educated society. Living completely by that creedo is utopian and quite possible unattainable, but failing to strive to make decisions on that basis is a betrayal of the institution and the taxpayers who fund it.

History was never among my better subjects, but didn't WSU FB die before Title IX was legislated? Or was it that Title IX was on the way and WSU had planned to add baseball and drop football when Title IX came into existence?

SASO is the main source of funds for WSU athletics. That's a credit to Schaus, because he's able to do it.

Lew Perkins couldn't. Maybe it was because he never thought he could do it "at this level". Maybe Perkins didn't relate to WSU fans. It's a bit of a burn to see the guy who axed WSU FB continue in the same career.

Ted Bredehoft was the ultimate at staging fund-raising events. I think it was in his era that WSU had Carr and Levingston and some of the highest SASO rates for BB tickets. Bredehoft still needed gimmicky fund-raisers and seemed to seldom keep WSU out of the red.

Schaus has quietly gone about raising the funds for WSU athletics. Many schools are cutting sports. WSU isn't.

It's unlikely a BCS school will hire Schaus since he has no recent experience with FB. I think the combination of Beggs and Schaus is probably the most athletic-friendly administration in the history of WSU.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.
