  • What is our offense?

No, this is a serious question. I must admit that I am puzzled. I am still not sure what WSU's half court offense is. It's clear they look for points on a break, then run a play, but after that what? I admit I am not a great basketball mind, and I would like some help from you folks that really know basketball. Once WSU settles into a half court offense what is it? Motion, inside-out, dribble-penetrate and dish? Tonight it seemed to be dribble, pass once and jack up a three. How would you describe the half court offense?

WSU had what, 1/3 of the shots were threes? True, many of them were open looks but they shoot so poorly from outside Creighton must have been thrilled they took so many threes. I think they shot 25% from three. We cannot win that way.

WSU missed so many shots not just in the paint but at the basket it boggles the mind. Make those and we win. All the coach can do is teach them how to get the shots, he cannot make the shots for them.

They did get shots at the basket inside, they just missed most of them. Is this a head thing?

Do not even get me started on free throws. That is clearly all a head thing.

Too bad they had to meet the best team in the Valley on the road first. Still if they think it all goes downhill from here how wrong they are.

I suspect that much of my confusion about our offense comes from newcomers trying to run an offense which is still new to them. I am not/will not give up on these guys but I really hope it starts to click with them soon.

PS - How about more lob passes at the basket to Mr. Stutz followed by a dunk?

You need an inside game to run this offense. Coach addressed this in the postgame.
Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, and Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time.

Our Offense is taken from the one page play book over at Hutch Juco. Let's see........ Ummmmmm dribble and shoot while four guys stand. Don't forget about the quick three with 32 seconds left in the shot clock.

Thanks Mulligan but I was hoping for something a little more substantive. I know what they did, but what were they supposed to do?

Basically Marshal said that in order for the three's to become better shots we need a better inside game. He talked about running an inside-out offense. Then he went into the gimme's that were missed and how he didn't know what to do, other than to beat the heck out of the players, to get them to make shots around the basket.

OK. So it is supposed to be an inside-put offense? If so that helps me watching the games to see what is deficient. Thanks.

We don't need no stinking offense. :D

I expected to lose so it's OK. We won the effort, rebounding, etc. battles and we would have won the game if we made the free throws and layups.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Since our half-court offense is so horrible...why don't we try to run and create more opportunities? I thought that's what Marshall wanted to do when he arrived here? Press, create turnovers, force the issue. It can't be much worse than what we are trying now. Give it a try. And don't just press to slow the other team down. Press to speed them up! I think our players are better suited to runnin' & gunnin' than a slow half-court game.

He's tried to get them to get out and run. The problem is when the other team shoots near 50% that takes a lot of those opportunities away. Last night they tried to push the ball more but didn't get much out of it. If you've watched Marshall at all the past few weeks you can tell he wants them to speed it up. He's constantly yelling at them and waiving his arms trying to get them to do so.

If they're going to run and gun, it's extremely important to run on both ends of the court. The transition D was painful last night. I wasn't counting how many times the Shox would push the ball up the court and miss a shot, only to have Creighton push it back for an easy 2, I know it happened far too many times.

I saw six to ten lobs to big men inside and numerous passes to the post that were mishandled. This is a serious question: When people question the offense and suggest more passes inside, do they forget those plays or ignore them?

That is the big problem. If the Shocker big men only hit 50% from the field the Shox are in the game and have a chance of winning it.

Until Stutz, Ellis and Durley develop a mean streak they are going to hurt the team when trying to go inside.
