  • WSU vs Georgetown Matchups/Stats

Georgetown defeated Jacksonville 71-62 and Drexel 81-53 both at home.

84.2% of their scoring has come from their starting 5 (92.8% from their Top 6 players). The scoring has been very balanced with all five starters averaging in double figures after two games.

6'11", 250 lb Freshman Center Greg Monroe leads the way at 17.0 PPG.

Clearly, a key for the Shockers will be whether or not Garrett Stutz can hold his own against Monroe.

DaJuan Summers, a 6'8", 236 lb Junior will be a challenge for Ramon.

Austin Freeman is a 6'4" Sophomore guard who goes a solid 239 lbs. Freeman scored 16 points in 21 minutes against Drexel and was 6-7 from the field. I assume A.J. will initially match up on Freeman with help as needed from Aaron.

Jessie Sapp a 6'3", 212 lb Senior guard and Chris Wright a 6'1", 201 lb Sophomore guard round out the starting lineup.

Jason Clark a 6'2", 176 lb Freshman guard has provided most of the production off the bench.

I think Toure matches up OK, but it will be interesting to see how Clevin and Reggie C. can handle Goergetown's size at the guard.

Georgetown has some beef holding down the bench with 6'5" 225 lb So Omar Wattad, 6'10" 225 lb Fr Henry Sims, 6'9" 246 lb So Julian Vaughan and 6'8" 214 lb So Nickita Macheriakov available but only contributiing 11 points collectively in the 1st two games.

I think we are going to need some solid minutes here and there from both Aaron Ellis and Mantas Griskenas to have any chance.

Not sure how J.T. fits into the picture with these matchups. May see him at the 4 more than usual in this game.

I am a little surprised to see that Georgetown has taken 44 of its 105 shots (42%) from behind the arc while making only 11 (25%). Could be they throw it up there and tell the big boys to go get it. By comparison 33% of the Shockers FGA attempts are from behind the arc and they are hitting 30% of those attempts. So neither team exactly lighting it up from 3-point range yet.

Also of interest is that Georgetown has been outrebounded 38.5 RPG to 35.5 RPG in its two games.

The Shocks are outrebounding its opponents 40.3 RPG to 23.7 RPG.

Georgetown has shot a very good 78.2% from the line on 43 of 55. That's as many attempts in 2 games as the Shockers have received in 3 games. Glad were on a nuetral court.

Georgetown is a fairly young team itself so they may be prone to the same inconsistencies that we have seen from the Shockers.

This will be an interesting challenge for the Shockers, and while unlikely, I don't think an upset is totally out of the question.

Thanks 1972---1972 was a great year. It sounds like it will be quite a chore to out rebound this team. Does anybody know if this game will be televised here?

By here, I assume you mean Wichita. If so, the answer is yes.

      ESPN 2 at 1:00 PM.

Pretty good deal since this year's NFL Turkey-Day games are not particularly appealing.

My thoughts on the broadcast, too. I'd much rather have Shocker hoops than midling football matchups. As '72 mentioned, I believe our hopes for taking this contest are going to be best realized by crashing the glass and slow, deliberate guard play.

It is my suspicion that G'town will want to speed the game up as much as possible, getting us to replicate some of the mistakes we've made against UMKC. However, if we can limit the number of possessions in the game and catch the Hoyas trying to rush the game tempo a bit, we'll have a good chance at doing something special.

It'll take a lot of effort and discipline from our young guys, but hopefully national TV and good guys wearing the other color will be cause to rise to the occasion.

I think the 3 point statistics and rebounding statistics from them are interesting. If we get them to shoot alot of 3s and not make alot and control the boards (which looks like it could be a possibility) i think the game could be alot closer than i had originally expected. good work!

All five starters average at least 4.0 rebounds per game in the Hoyas two games and the 6th man, Clark, has average 3.0 rebounds in the two games. The big center Monroe leads the way at 7.5.

On the other hand the Shocks rely heavily on RC for boards. He is averaging 11.7 per game followed by AJ at 4.0 per game.

Again this could be a real challenge for our guards to hold their own with the bigger and stronger Hoya guards.

I would like to say we will have a quickness advantage at guard, but I don't really know if that will be the case or not.

While the Hoyas shoot a lot of treys with limited success, they also must be getting a lot of points in the paint. They are shooting 62.3% (38 - 61) as a team from the field on their two-point attempts.

Jacksonville and Drexel OTOH only managed a combined 26 - 80 inside the arc for 32.5%.

So it would appear the Hoyas interior defense is pretty solid.

                63

                58

If the Shox play disciplined inside/out game and the point guards played disciplined, then we might be able to reverse that score.

If our big guys stay out of foul trouble, and possibly get theirs in foul trouble...anything is possible.

Agree--although if this is the case, we are hosed.

Mantas is a different player than he was before knee injury 1, let alone injuries 2 and 3. Aaron Ellis has never assumed the style of play that his growing body has dictated---in his mind, he is a guard trapped in a forward's body.

Loved the effort from Aaron in trying to get to the rack with force last night, but he is not our man from beyond the new arc.

If it comes down to Mantas and Aaron we are in trouble.

Aaron is just now getting back into things and suffering from the toe injury. He'll be fine and needed.

I'd feel better about Mantas if he wasn't just coming back from the achilles. I'm not sure how much he'll be able to give us this weekend, but down the road both those guys are going to be very valuable.

And Ellis is capable of hitting from the new line. He's not going to be a 40% guy, but he'll be fine once he settles in.

I'm not necessarily saying they are the key elements, but I do think we could definitely benefit from about 8 minutes of solid play from each of them.

Whether or not they are ready to do that at this point because of their injuries, I don't know, but I think there length could be of some help.

Aaron has actually been pretty aggressive on the boards this year IMO. Unfortuantely, his offensive game is no where to be found.

Manta also looked pretty aggressive on the boards in his only outing, although maybe that was easy to do against a smallish Centenary team.

As far as I am concerned, points are a bonus from Aaron Ellis. What I LOVED last night was the way he boxed out and went aggressively to the ball and grabbed it with tenacity. We need that and he showed last night he is capable of delivering.

Every shot he attempts should be completed with both hands wrapped firmly around the rim. Anything beyond that distance should be left to the other shooters on the team.

Agreed Doc---I also really liked how Coach shuffled the lineup and the players to fit the match-ups and the efforts from previous games and practice. We will have a smorgasbord of options.
