  • What's it gonna take? (WSU-GMU series)

    Greetings Shocks,

Hope ya'll are enjoying your summer. It's been a strangely mild August here in DC. Low humidity and nice temps. It's great...but weird. It's usually insufferably hot and sticky at this time of year!

So what's it gonna take to get that series going with you guys? There seemed to be some momentum after the great Bracketbuster games and the Sweet 16 matchup a couple years back.

I know there's lots that goes into D1 hoops scheduling -- especially at the "ambitious upper mid" level (for lack of a better term) -- but it always seemed to me that it would be a win-win series; quality teams, good RPI value, East Coast exposure for WSU, GMU gets to show what we've got in midwest, and MVC/CAA games get some attention. What's the downside?

It's not like the BCS schools are beating both our doors down to give us games.

Anyone have any inside scoop on what might have derailed the WSU-GMU series? Or maybe it was never really in the works and fans like me just kept the notion alive with this sort of chatter?

Looking forward to following you in your '08-'09 season. Best of luck!

:goshocks: (except when that series finally happens!)

I think that the scheduling was headed in the direction of a series, until we changed coaching staffs.

I agree with Yellow Snow about it being about the coaching staff direction, but it would be fun to get that going again. Doubt it will happen though sadly.

Getting exposure in VA wouldn't suck. We know Marshall and Grant recruit the Carolinas as well as GA and FL. VA wouldn't be bad at all. And the exposure and pub from a Mason/Wichita State game would still be good.

With Marshall hailing from that region, I would think getting a game there every year or two would boost recruiting.

Now that we're looking toward 2009-10, putting a couple of years since the last matchup, the timing would be pretty good.

It seems that this year's priority was getting games in TX where we do a lot of recruiting.

This year WSU needs some easy home games becuase of the inexperience. A year or 2 down the road the coaching staff might look at replacing one of the buy games with another home-and-away.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Ya, it wouldn't look good getting beat for a third time in 3 years to GMU..

But in all seriousness, I would love for this series to get renewed. I agree with GoGMU that it makes perfect sense. It shouldn't take a bracketbuster committee or NCAA tournament committee to get these schools to play.

              I'm all for it.

Have your coach or A.D. contact the person below. I am sure we would love to schedule a game. I believe the going rate is around $70,000 so it definitely will be worth your while. I think you will have to wait another year though because our schedule is done for 2008/2009.

I know quite a few GMU fans who would love to see this series happen, too. Keep hope alive.

ColdBlooded, I'll start doing some fund raising to come up with that $70K. It's just money, right? A few good bake sales should do it. And maybe some carnival games, too. You won't mind being the "dunkee", would you?

                      I mean, it's a good cause and all. ;-)

I hope we can resume this series in the future. It will be a few years though at least. We have had a turnover in both the AD and coaching staff. At this point it might be better if you guys made the first overtures. Our coach seems to like to recruit in that area so I doubt that he would reject a one and one out of hand. This years schedule is set and we set it up for a young team. The next few years as our team builds look better for a WSU vs GMU match up.

For what it's worth I just sent an email to Coach L suggesting he try to make it happen. He's replied to my emails in the past so if I hear anything I'll let ya'll know.

Shouldn't the non-con schedule be due to be out?

And I agree, Playing GMU every year would be a competitive classic matchup for us. The GMU guys on our board are good sports and a pleasure.
