    1. Paul Miller has really expanded his game. He was draining 3s right and left. Of course it helped that there was not any hand in his face, but nevertheless, he was drilling them.

He was really running the floor well. Many times, he was the first man down court on the break.

He was quite impressive today. I hope he gets another NBA shot.

    2. I'm still lovin' Reggie C. I love Hannah too. It is amazing how they can weave among the trees to either shoot or dish. Both are very clever.

    3. A.J. was suited up, but he stayed on the side. He was just hanging out with his mates and having a good time. I was hoping to see him play.

    4. Ramon had a little rougher time today because he was up against at least two big men. Nevertheless, he had some bright moments.

    5. The big men were EO, Garrett, Paul Miller and Aaron. Also, the Emporia State guy. No one seems to know his name. He is about 6-8, burly, left handed and physical.

    6. Aaron clearly is playing with more confidence than last year. He struggled with his shot, but he was not bashful about putting it up.

    7. There were so many players there today, it minimized the play of some. Some players became discouraged and left.

    8. Remember Jimmy Bolden? Class of '93. His stomach is still flat as a board. I imagine he was sucking pond water a little, but he looked great as a skin.

    9. Coach Gross came by and said hello. Sorta reminded me of Jean Prioleau.

    10. Remember Ron Mendell? Class of '69. He was in the stands. He still follows the Shockers closely. I don't know him personally, but I have seen him at many games.

    11. The classic play of the day was a strip of P.J. by E.O. Now you had to be there to appreciate it. They were head up out near the free throw line and P.J. was trying to juke and go. E.O. not only was staying with him juke for juke, he reached out and stripped the ball. P.J. called a foul, but I have my doubts about the call. I think P.J. might have been a little bit embarrassed. Even if E.O. did foul, it was still worth seeing. Soccer feet and wing span in action.

I know the fans will like E.O. from the git-go. I just don't know, when they will fall in love with him. Lots of potential there. Lots and lots.

    12. I just thought of another classic. E.O.'s team was running up court and E.O. was trailing the other 9 guys. E.O. was running to set up low like he always does. He got to the top of the key and boom! Someone passed the ball to him and he stopped dead in his tracks. He had this startled reaction as if to say, "I am not suppose to have the ball out here." I guess it is not so classic, but it was amusing at the moment.

    13. Craig Steven's little brother was there again. He play one set today and left.

    14. P.J. and Paul dominated the ball today. I realize it is good for the underclassmen to play against more accomplished players, but when they dominate the ball, other players start standing around as spectators so to speak. I should throw P.J.'s brother's name in there because the Cousinard brothers like to do a lot of two man tricks together - pick and roll, alley oop, etc.

Makin' me pull out the way-back machine here. When Mendell was in grad school, he used to go to Henrion for pickup games. So did I. We were both PG's and always on opposite teams. Our team strategy in those games was never give me the ball. I ran around looking like I was trying to go to a spot to set something up. Mendell never gave me an inch. That left it 4-on-4 on O. On the other end, let's just say we got a lot of practice on help D.

Whoa! Cooz isn't easy to stop in that situation. Cooz is also incredibly quick. 7' guys aren't known for their quickness.

Wingspan probably had a lot to do with it, but Cooz couldn't outquick Orukpe from 15'?? And when he kept trying Orukpe kept up with the footwork and stripped him? Dang! Somebody needs to teach EO how to put the ball in the hoop.

I'm going to make a wild guess that Stutz is watching every move Miller makes around the hoop and is going to learn some tough shots that are tougher to defend.

Stutz against Orukpe in practices could be a big plus in the next few years. Stutz can probaly teach Orukpe some moves. Orukpe can probably teach Stutz what he's got to do to get an open look and not have the word "Rawlings" implanted on his forehead.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

I thought PJ was suppose to leave June 29th for the Bulls?

I'd guess we won't see much more of PJ as I thought he was leaving this week.

Thanks for the update RDR. I'm hoping to get a chance to go back out there next week and catch some action.

Didn't someone say that AJ had been in a boot to help protect an injured toe? I'm guessing he's done with that now and may be close to getting out there.

AE wasn't out there last weekend. I hope I get to see him play soon. I really want to see him be more aggressive with the ball in his hands.

Paul did dominate, really putting the wood to Garrett, who couldn't keep up with him. Garrett, who was obviously frustrated, left the building after the first game. I should say that I don't know if that was the reason he left, but one of the coaches passing through asked JT where he was and then borrowed JT's cell phone to call him.

The ESU big guy is Doug Moore, who played at East a couple of years ago.

Agree on the EO strip of PJ ... it looked clean to me. He showed several times that he has really good hands, making catches in traffic of difficult passes and tipping/stealing passes on defense.

EO also had a vicious two-handed dunk on a pick and roll that proved he can really get up and also stuffed Paul cold on a dunk attempt running the baseline.

Ramon was hot and cold, but he was still shooting his rainbow jumpers from 15-18 ft. with confidence, something that, as others have pointed out on the board, is a new wrinkle for him this year.

Clevin Hannah looked really good. Shifty, deceptively quick, great shooter. He also had about 245 assists, because he was on the team with Paul, PJ, Jay and Aaron that did not lose (as of 6:30).

Taj Gray was walking in the arena as I left.

Does anyone know the date when team organized 4-on-4 practices can take place?

              AJ

Ricky, I've been wanting to see AJ play, too. Here's an update on him:

Q When will AJ Hawkins be ready to start scrimmaging with the WSU basketball team this summer? I went to a scrimmage a week ago & saw him on the sideline with some kind of a rig on one foot.

A: Toe surgery. I think his return depends on rehab. Perhaps later this summer.

When I worked for the Eagle back in the 70's we used to play every Satuday morning with Mendell he had a very sweet shot.
Let's hope he can hit a D-1 Curve ball!

I am curious to hear if there is any followup on this. I hope Garrett Stutz is not hurt and I hope this is not a character issue. I would expect any freshman to be "taken to the woodshed" by the 2006 MVC POY who has been playing pro ball since he left WSU. If summer games bother Garrett, how will he react when we play SIU?

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

My hunch is, if GS is bothered, it's only temporary. I would suspect up in KC he didn't have to play against anyone that has the skills of a Paul Miller or most of the Shocker players here this summer. It's just an adjustment, and I bet 6 mos. from now, he will be looking back on the experience as a very good thing that helped him prepare for what he will face.

I would rather he face any disappointments he may have in his own performance NOW rather than when the season starts. He's young -- he will learn. I'm pretty sure he has most always been the best player on his team and this is a HUGE adjustment for him. GS will get there with the help of his coaches and teammates. It's called growing up. Maturity can be unpleasant at times, but it's these life lessons that shape what the future GS will be. I've not met his family, but have heard they are made of stellar "stuff." Coming from that background, I have no fear that GS will indeed adjust.

You needn't worry. Garrett is not unlike many kids his age. They expect success and get frustrated when it doesn't come as easy as before. His character is beyond reproach. This is a kid with a background that most of us would dream of.....he was probably just mad at the time. He'll be fine.

And he'll be a force in our league way before he graduates.

Remember guys, Garrett just graduated high school a month ago. He will learn and be a key factor for this season once coach can get his hands on him.

I think Garrett will be fine. He may be facing some of the toughest competition he will face all year right now with EO and Paul!
                            Practice will be fun.

I have no idea what caused GS to leave after the first game, but if it was because he was frustrated at getting whupped by PM, that is not a good sign, I don't care how you spin it. Would you agree it would be a better story had he stayed and kept coming back for more, even though he was getting beat?

Quit during pick up games, when else are you going to quit?
