I just don't think family and pride in your city mean as much as it did in the past. Playing AAU ball and traveling has a lot to do with it.
A lot of kids just want to get away from home. Sometimes parents want to get the kid out of town because of other influences that
are causing problems (see Taj Gray).

I think most of the top athletes seem to be playing football now. But I also think it's only a matter of time before business begins to pick up again.

I have no basis for thinking this, but perhaps the instability of coaching has a little bit to do with it. Recruiting is all about relationships and the coaches begin building those critical relationships earlier and earlier, and even earlier yet with local kids. By the time the kid becomes an actual recruiting target, the coach is either in the doghouse or rumored to find a better gig. Thus the recruits don't have the relationship here.

Blame the media! Who wouldnt blame a young gifted player for going to a school which is on tv al the time. More tv = bigger atheletic budget= fawned over by media personalities = better chance to show their skills to a larger audience and NBA

As far as the talent level in the Wichita area, I would guess that the era you refer to is more of the "exception" than the rule. This is not a large metro area, but we have continued to have excellent players from time to time, just not in the numbers over the short period of time you mentioned.

As I undersand it from people that should know, Cohen didn't even recruit some excellent players that were here and wanted to come to WSU. I'm sure that didn't help WSU's relationship with area players. Combine that with the fact the program fell into the deep black depths and one might say that it was surprising that we got the area players that we did.

I believe that's all going to change. Go Shox!

I would like to add Ricky Ross to the list of talented Wichita players at that time. Some people forget that he was the best (high schooler) of the bunch.

Kinda reminds me of the boys on basketball diaries.

From mid 70's to mid 80's was a great era for HS basketball in the Wichita area. Besides the ones that went to WSU, there were some great players like Valentine & Koening and a few that didn't go to school at all like Chris Boyd. I'm sure there were others that I'm not thinking of. It would be interesting to compile a list of D-1 BB players from the area and see if most came from that era. I may just be stuck in the 70's !!!

It seems to me that there have been alot of very good players since then but not in bunches like it was during that time.

Also Darrell (sp) Pace and his older brother (can't think of his 1st name) from West. Darrell was a teammate of Papke. A few years later, Kent Hill. Did Kent go to Iowa?

A lot of good Division 1 players came out of South during the Eck years. Murdock, Woodbury and several others.

Gaylon Nickerson was a mid 80's player for North.

Chris Boyd played for Fogler but he was dismissed.

I also think that now days hs players go to prep schools. Carr and sherrods days that didnt really exist. So most players come from the same farm for the most part.

I think things just run in spurts.

My alma mater, Southeast, had an unbelievalbe run of athletes in nearly every sport in the 1970s and early 80s (before I was there.)

They were the national champs in baseball, had state championships in football, basketball, golf, tennis and possibly even track.

The Eagle did an artilce about Wichita's best prep athletes a few years ago, and many of the non-basketball athletes were from Southeast.

He was a fine player, but he was a problem child and a drifter

It's completely circular. Talent will come and go.

One thing that most definitely could help: better facilities in the city league. Those gyms are horrible. The city needs to step up and pass the bond issue this November.

That's a good start, but there are many other issues as well that need to be dealt with too, to keep the kids in the district.

This talk in a few years might be more about the kids from the schools surrounding USD 259, and not the ones that are part of it. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days, that a school like Trinity or Independent, or even Collegiate pulls off one heckuva team that puts a few people in D1. I just don't see it happening at a Wichita Public School anytime soon though.
