  • Pick up games June 12

I went to pick up games today at the Chuck. Saw some pretty decent ball and a couple shockernetters (What's up Snapshot9). For any posters that were there, feel free to chime in and correct me if you know I misidentified people. Those in attendance were Clemente, Durley, Paul Miller, Orupke, Stutz, Hannah, Chamberlain, Kyles, Cooz, Jay Cousinard, Murray, and an unknown guy. Here is my analysis of what I saw today.

Clemente - solid as always. I have a strong feeling that he will be the senior leader that we will need this year. He did a great job getting the guys together today. Couple good tip dunks.

Durley - started out kind of lazy but picked it up. Stayed mostly on the outside. Looked a little soft, like maybe the weight room hasn't kicked in yet. Did have a pretty impressive block on an Orupke dunk.

Miller - was a beast. Deserves to get a look somewhere.

Orupke - is definitely an offensive project but has a sweet looking shot. Inside he is weak and a bit tentative. I have no doubt he will be a defensive presence. He blocked/redirected 75% of the shots that came his way. Runs very well and is aggressive to the boards.

Stutz - not impressive today. I thought he forced way to much offensively and looked a step and a half slow. Just didn't have an overall great day. I am confident he will be much better but he was the biggest disappointment for me today.

Hannah/Chamberlain - WOW. They got in the same category because they were great in my opinion. They both shot the ball very well and showed a nice stroke. They ran the team and played great D. Very impressive.

Kyles - after I figured out which one he was I liked him. He didn't do anything that was overly impressive but I think he will be pretty good. He was in the red shorts right?

Brothers Cooz - played well. Cooz is a beast and I thought Jay looked better today than I ever saw at Evansville. Good pick up for Ryan Martin and the UMKC squad.

Murray/Unknown guy - not real sure about this. There were two guys and I am not quite sure which one he was. There was a guy in silver shorts and a guy with burgandy shorts. I thought he was the one in silver. They both played well. I will save my analysis until I figure out who is who.

Last tidbit - As I was getting ready to watch, Coach Marshall walked by me. He went in the hallway and got a phone call. As I tried to listen, I heard him offer a sholarship to a potential recruit. He said yes. Marshall said that he recruit had "made his night" and if "he didn't come in and start, I'll be pissed." It is a great day to be a Shocker!!!!!!

I believe it is, but not sure they will ever step foot on the floor in a game.

Obviously I cannot be completely sure but the name I heard sounded a lot like Gabe. Like I said, I could have been wrong, but I heard something about 6'8 and would be a good addition for gameplay next year. Take it for what it is worth.

That is what Sub and I tried to figure out. Marshall talked to someone afterward, could have been Dave Dahl, saying the the kid would be a good replacement for Ramon and Mantas next year. Said he averaged 23 minutes a game at a Conference USA school. Said he was a "freak athlete" and that Marshall has seen him dunk easily from the FT line. No matter who it is, we will know by sunday/monday because that is when the media will be contacting him

Is Mantas able to participate in the pickup games yet or is he still recovering?

He was not there. When a man asked Marshall tonight about Mantas, he said he was "coming along."

That's a pretty good analysis, except I thought Kyles was in the Silver shorts. I remember from watching his video that he was pretty smooth looking, more so than the guy in the bright red shorts was.

Which one was Toure, I don't know. There was actuallly 2 guys there that were guards that were not our guys, so picking up on Kyles and Murry was difficult.

Hannah looked good, and will be the starting PG, IMO. Hannah has a step up, slight fade away shot that is real nice. I still think Kyles will be paired up with him, with Reggie and Murry coming in off the bench. Reggie looked pretty good, hit a couple of shots, made some nice passes.

Stutz was my biggest disappointment also. He looks soft (needs to hit the weights hardtime). He has basketball sense, but is slow. He needs to step it up for D-1 ball, and to develop some inside quick moves. You're not in High School anymore. Stutz seemed a little taller than Orukpe, just a tad.
Paul Miller was a beast, and he could help Stutz a lot.

Orukpe - Defensively, he will be fine with more play, and some coaching help. He looked stronger than Stutz to me. Before the pickup games, he was working on offensive moves. Developing some, but needs to learn to throw a fake or two when he does them. Worked on baby hooks quite a bit, especially left handed. Matt helped him some. He has a nice looking shot, and was making 3 pointers before the pickup games started. His 4-8 ft offensive game is what needs work. Closer than 4 ft, and he is fine offensively.

The players all looked like they were getting along just fine.

Most D-1 newbies true frosh or juco seem to be a step to step and one-half behind. I know a lot of Shockernetters have unrealistic expectations for most every member of this recruit class. The 2009 season will be better but 2010 is for travelin' :good: save your dimes now for the unholy airfares to points unknown in March 2010. The wife and I certainly are doing so

Just a guess on Stutz, but there is a definite adjustment period both on the court and in the weight room. He's probably working harder than he has ever worked in his life and by 5:00 is drained. If this is the case, I'm confident that he will fight thru it and be all that CGM thinks he can be.

                              Keep working hard Garrett !!!
