  • O.J. Mayo's AmEx Card ...

    If true, wow. Just .... Wow.

    (Mods, not sure if this belongs on Off-Topic. It's kind of a big cbb story.)

    The California Attorney General's office is investigating the possible illegal use of an American Express card account that was opened under the guise of being issued to a sickle cell charity, but was reportedly used to provide thousands of dollars in benefits for former USC freshman guard O.J. Mayo, a state official told ESPN "Outside the Lines" reporter Kelly Naqi.

    Well, until Royal gives an official, I think it's easily admissible as it is basketball related. :)

    The entire story just sickens me. What's worse, this isn't the first I've heard of regarding Mayo and money payments.

    If it smells like horse manure, and looks like horse manure, well, it's horse manure. {edited down}

        Can you say goodbye Tim Floyd?
        Former NBA coaches rarely work out coming back to the college side. There are exceptions (Pitino, etc) but they are used to doing whatever they want - and without dealing with the watchful eye of the almighty NCAA. 8)
        Above all, make the right call.

          Not only good-bye Tim Floyd, but good-bye athletic director, compliance officer(s), and NCAA tourney eligibility. This is not the first money related offense at USC in the past couple of years. They're gonna get something done to them. And it's damn sure time it did.

            I hate to be cynical, but the NCAA and the TV executives cannot afford to have serious penalties applied to one of their west coast marquee programs. There is too much money at stake.

            The program will get a minor slap on the wrist, if that. Some kind of exculpatory alibi will more than likely be found to hold USC blameless.

            Such is modern-day life in the world of the BCS conferences -- $$$!

              It's been almost two years since Reggie Bush's alleged violations came to light. Southern California apparently got off the hook with that one. If the allegations against Mayo are true, the NCAA is going to have to do something to the USC athletic department. I can't imagine the NCAA coming down hard on a big revenue school like USC, but you figure something big has to happen.

                USC will simply claim they knew NOTHING about ANYTHING. How could USC be expected to know that Mayo was using an AmEx card that did not belong to him to purchase all kinds of things. There was absolutely nothing that would have raised a red flag when a kid from Mayo's background shows up with a flat screen TV or tons of new, expensive clothes. What is suspicious about that?

                  I think the NCAA is going to really come down on USC and declare Mayo ineligible next year and charge him a year of eligibility to boot.

                  That'll show USC that they can't just repeatedly have their athletes taking money from prospective agents.

                  Can't punish USC more than that. There's obviously no issues of institutional control. Nothing to see here. Keep moving along. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.
