IIRC, they haven't won an NCAA Tournament game since 1973 or so.

Maybe someone with extreme determination and confidence that also has a strong sentimental attachment to the state?

I have no idea if Marshall would have been interested in that job, but it's extremely biased to assume that he wouldn't have been. One thing I know for certain is that he believes he could be successful there. I wouldn't want a coach at WSU that would believe otherwise.

I'm not sure how Katz got the gig he has. He isn't all that insightful, interesting, or intelligent. Gottlieb, on the other hand, is as good as it gets. Absolutely phenomenal at what he does.
Katz has the best connections in national college basketball media coverage but obviously his strengths aren't in live game commentary. That's why he's not featured very often during games, and when he is, he's the courtside reporter, not a commentator.

I would submit that anyone in that position with that network would have those connections. He is used to get the information out the way they want it out in situations where they can be the ones directly commenting on it.
There's no denying the access he gets, but as you said, it's as much about who he works for as who he is. He's a much better reporter than analyst, that's for sure.

I'm not trying to say that SC is a bad job at all. My point is, there have been some pretty darn good coaches (Fogler, Odum, etc) that have went there and had "moderate" at best sucess. Although we were in the dark ages in the late 80's and 90's, we have had a couple of pretty good runs here and one very recently. Plus we sell out on a regular basis win or lose.

Carolina won the NIT two years in a row in '05 and '06. Not sure if I'd rather win two straight NITs or have one S16 run. Probably about equal? The baseball program is strong, with three CWS appearances since 2002, but they don't have the title like WSU does. And their football program had one bowl win before Holtz got there. They get owned every year by Clemson and every few years by a hurricane. But they do have some amazingly hot ladies there.

What's strange is how Katz used to love WSU when Turgeon was here. Anyone else remember him calling us the "next Gonzaga", with a great coach and a great facility?

He and Turg must of hit it off well, because as soon as Mark left, Katz praises went with him.

Don't hold me to this, but I think Katz' love affair with WSU turned sour when we dropped out of the rankings in January '07. When the bandwaggon slowed down, Katz jumped off.

                        Agree.

He's always seemed the type of guy who's made a good living regurgitating the obvious, only with the wording and intonation that make it seem like an original thought.

I remember this as well. Katz wrote many articles praising Shocker Basketball during the 05-06 and 06-07 seasons. One I remember was titled something like "Shockers poised to become national name", which was very laudatory. I always found it strange why Katz was so in love with Wichita State, because there were other "mid-major" programs that were doing well at the same time. He must have wrote at least 3 or 4 major articles about Wichita State during that time. I think you are possibly right about Katz and Turgeon having a close relationship. That would explain it. Either that or Katz was trying to make himself look real smart by picking an up-and-coming team to write about before anyone else in the national media picked up on them.

But in general, Katz was one of the most favorable national reporters toward Wichita State hoops, so I wouldn't start raking the guy over the coals over a stupid comment. Gottlieb also has been quite favorable toward the Valley in his comments. Maybe he makes a stupid comment every now and then, but in general his views of the Valley and of WSU are positive, at least from what I've heard in his commentaries on ESPN over the last few years. On the subject of ESPN commentators, I also think Fran Fraschilla and Bilas are usually favorable toward WSU and the Valley.

The real WSU haters on ESPN are Vitale and Digger. Those two NEVER speak positively about WSU or the Valley. I can't stand either one.

To be fair, nationally, that was about the right time to forget about us. Like it or not, sports is a performance-based industry. We got the love when we did something impactful on a national level and we will get the love when we make ourselves relevant again. I believe with Marshall that is sooner rather than later. I am admittedly biased.

The national media guys have no reason to have the same bias. It is probably as simple as looking at the actual results of the last 20 years and seeing the S16 as the outlier rather than the reasonable expectation. It's "our" job to make that assumption wrong.

Remember the most fun thing about sports and being a fan is blowing assumptions and expectations out of the water. It's also when you get the most love from the talking heads in the media.

I know more than one person that hit on this phenomenon during this past season. Some even go so far as to speculate how GM is perceived behind closed doors within segments of the media and coaching circles. Their are definite rumblings. I, for one, subscribe to the theory from my post above. I truly don't give a spit. You make them acknowledge you through performance and accomplishment and screw the rest.
