A lot. If you think back to who we were known to be recruiting two years ago, we could have had a hell of a team last year if we land even a couple of them. Just as we have mentioned in the "following the coach to his new job" debate, when you miss on player A after players B AND C commit somewhere else, you are left with player D. I think the biggest difference is that Turgeon was trying to break through his self-imposed glass ceiling and Marshall has believed from day 1 that the sky is the limit. Because of this, I think GM will have more success bringing in his first choice.

I feel obligated to chime in on this because of someone I met a few months ago that is close to Chedder. Apparently this fine young man has come to camps at WSU for quite some time and when it became clear that he was a tremendous talent, a former coach I won't name, backed off telling the family of the Cheese that he was too good to be a Shocker. This particular coach began recruiting him again when he was hired to another school in another state in another conference. The family was not pleased.
I'm not sure if I'm really angry or just really saddened at the above statement(s). I think I'll just go

I'd be interested in hearing Turfin's take on the Noel Johnson issue. Based on my own conversations with the previous coach over the years, and Cheese's involvement at several basketball functions , I question whether the description above is accurate. I don't doubt there are elements of truth, but the fact that WSU has never, as far as I know, been listed on any recruiting services as a school of interest for Noel might well be attributed to the fact that the kid just isn't interested in playing at WSU or in the MVC. And why in the world would a rational coach "back off" if they thought they'd be leaving for greener pastures? Wouldn't they press even harder while they were still here and maintain the relationship so they could then take advantage of the relationship when they left? Of course, this is the internet, so I understand that once it is posted, it's gospel.
I'm not much of a conspiracy theorist. I'm a simple person and tend to go with the simple explanation of things. I would speculate that Noel's lack of interest in WSU is similar to the lack of interest and caused by the same factors that lead almost all other top 10 - 50 recruits to wind up at BCS schools: that is where they think they belong.
Now, all that being said, I do think Gregg and staff are more likely to land better athletes (because of their style of play) and, hopefully, more highly touted players (because they see a higher ceiling on the kids they can recruit here) than in the past.
And I'd love to see Noel here. But I think that's a pipe dream and has been for a long, long time.

789 - Pretty much agree with you, but fans here are just hoping that Noel feels some kind of alligence to WSU since Cheese went here, but most likely not. He will go to the biggest stage where he can shine.
CGM and staff are showing a better attitude towards recruiting, and I think are beating the bushes more in their recruiting efforts. They are not oblivious to the fact that many prospects will be lost to BCS schools. How they temper their efforts in that regard will prove to be their effectiveness for the program.
I think they also 'recognize' talent levels better, and the type of player they want better. Even though it was pretty much a rush job last year, Clemente is a very good player, Ellis has talent unleashed as of yet, but we have seen his potential some, and Griskenas, I think, will show more this coming season.
The incoming recruits so far seem to be good ones, and maybe a couple of sleepers in the group that can be standouts. This coming season will really be a determining factor in giving our coaching staff a grade for recruiting efforts.
