Unfortunately, there are no weekend non-conference games while the weather is theoretically decent unless you do the exhibition game, which I am guessing will be the Saturday before the UMKC game.

Hell. Rain, snow, or shine, I'm in! Everybody grill their own? Perhaps we could chip in and hire security to watch our stuff until after the game. I have got a really cool portable setup for cooking.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I agree that Eck is not ideal and probably too far away. The discus area outside CKA is not a viable alternative since it is a small space that lacks infrastructure like electricity, toilets, etc. We would also have issues with controlling entrance into the area and with beer sales or consumption involved we must have an effective way to control the crowd and check ID.

That leaves Cessna which only works early in the season with the games against non-conference opponents. Waiting for the new conference home games would require an indoor venue and on campus venues that can host a large crowd are even farther away than Eck from the parking areas near the arena. It seems like this is an idea with some appeal that unfortunately bumps up against too many logistical hurdles.

This is probably why it has never been attempted in the past, the reality is basketball is not really a tailgate friendly event during a Kansas winter and early in the season the interest level may be too low to guarantee a successful event.

People in Wichita love an event. You would have success with a well executed one off. If beer is going to be sold in the arena then the attractiveness of tailgating is directly proportional to the temperature. Are shuttles still running from any local watering holes? The other thing to remember is that basketball at WSU is a family event, meaning kids that have to be in bed on weeknight games and adults that have to go to work. Six or seven football home games in Alabama or Texas on a Saturday is one thing, Tuesday night on a Kansas February is another.

I realize the SASO room is used by SASO members in CKA but if the tailgate party shuts down 30 minutes before game time is that enough time to set up what needs to be set up for the SASO folks. Treat it like the Pep Rallies at post season games. Have MK and DD to a little into with shocker sound and a cameo by one of the coaches.

Nobody can douse a crowd like Dave Dahl. He is the anti hype man.

He's ice cold. In 6 out of his last 10 speaking engagements everyone has fallen asleep.

There are 17 keys to why this happened, most of which are directly related to the existence of those 17 keys. But, at least listening to those 17 items keeps us from listening to DOFO.

Problem with this is that it competes with the big spenders at the Champions Club for roughly the same benefit. I think it needs to be outdoors, in designated tailgate parking lots and tailgaters pay up for the privilege of parking in said lot(s). Bring in some tents, propane heaters, allowing grilling/food trucks and call it good. Create a Blue Collar Champions Club East and West.

Why can't it still be done in January/ February? I know it's cold, but people still tailgate at football games in December. Those who want to attend will brave the cold. Get enough layers on, plus the heat from the grills, a little alcohol in your belly, the cold won't be too bad.

As for location, why not over at Fairmount Towers? They're going to be tearing it down soon. Big corner lot adjacent to the stadium. Hell, keep the dining hall and use that as the indoor location. Allow the lot to be used for actual tailgating. $5 outside BYOB in the lot, or $10 for inside, some food and drinks provided. You'll fill the building with families and those who don't want to brace the elements, but still generate revenue from those who want to do their own thing.
Three things in life are constant- death, taxes, and Creighton losing in the first weekend of the tournament.

Personally, I think you all might be over-estimating just how much interest there would be in this at least as a routine thing.

If fans were really interested in tailgating or pre-game get togethers wouldn't that already be happening organically to some degree? Wouldn't the Shocker Grill in the RSC be packed (it's not; not even close and they sell beer)? Maybe the Preferred Health Multi-Purpose Center would be adequate for this although you are not going to draw any of the Champions Club members away from their exclusive digs. Whether or not the University would make that available for something like this is hard to say.

If you really want to do the lazy man's thing have all of the food trucks there two hours before game time and stay until 30 minutes before. Gets people out and about milling around the Discus field, etc and probably would increase participation about ten fold. People could still cookout if they wanted.

The issue again becomes competing with Champions Club and Concessions but food trucks may work. Do they just pay a fee to school or does school get a cut of their sales?

The discus lawn is plenty big. You could put up some temporary fencing to control access. Portable generators could provide power.

As for the always unpredictable weather...well, just pray very hard! You might get lucky. The reality is that November can be just as cold as January and February (see Thanksgiving weekend 2015).
