Let's change gears with our conversation with the great voice of the Shockers, Mike Kennedy. Mike and I had a nice conversation about his broadcast journey.
SHOXMVC: "Living the dream is a common phrase used to describe people who love what they do professionally. Are you living your dream as the iconic voice of the Shockers for nearly 40 years?"
Mike Kennedy: "To be totally truthful, when I first went into broadcasting, I thought my "dream job" was to land a position in Major League baseball. However, I grew up a Shocker fan, and when the opportunity came to become part of the broadcasts, on a part-time basis, in 1976-77, I found that I really enjoyed being connected to my alma mater again, and to be involved with adding new moments and history to the program I had grown up with. When I was offered the chance to become the full-time "Voice of the Shockers" in 1980, it had become what I wanted to do more than anything. 37 years later, and counting, I can truly say this did become my dream job, and I wouldn't trade the relationships that have developed, and the moments I have had a chance to experience for anything. I have had a chance to describe a National Championship victory in baseball, a Final Four in men's basketball, and many, many more special moments. I have worked with some incredible coaches, and have had a chance to be around some wonderful young people who have been a joy to interact with, and who have kept me young, in spirit at least. With the incredible rise of men's basketball, and now the move to an exciting new conference, I am enjoying what I do more than ever, and I certainly hope it is something I can continue to do for quite some time."
Isn't it interesting that in some moments our personal or professional outlook seems so clear, but life happens and something else provides even more clarity that trumps the original moment. I wonder what is around the next corner...
