  • *** SHOCKERNET EXCLUSIVE Interview with Mike "Trivia" Kennedy PART 1!!!

As Kung Wu stated earlier today, there is great excitement as SN has candid access to a Wichita sports icon, Mike Kennedy. Mike and I sat down recently and chatted about many things Wichita State athletics. Part 1 of our Q & A will make ShockerPhi especially happy, as he/she wanted Mike to talk about the Shockers joining the American Conference. That was one of the many topics we talked about, so here we go...

SHOXMVC: "Mike, moving to the American Athletic Conference has WSU fans excited about the future of Shocker athletics. What will you miss about the MVC and what are you most excited about moving forward in the AAC?"

Mike Kennedy: "Initially, the thought of leaving the Valley was a little difficult for me because I have grown up with it and I am so aware of its rich history, back to the days when it was the "Valley of Death". Unfortunately, it is a long way from that right now, and many of the schools which have been good, and possibly could be again, are facing serious financial issues which make it even more difficult than ever to climb back to the level of play they have demonstrated in the past. Therefore, I feel it was imperative for WSU to explore its options, and to be able to land in a conference the caliber of the American Athletic without having to bring back football is almost literally a dream come true. What I will miss about the MVC are the people. People in the conference office like Doug Elgin, Jack Watkins, and Mike Kern, and other broadcasters like Art Hains, Dick Luedke, Mike Reis, and Dave Snell are not only respected professional colleagues, but longtime friends, and while I'm sure we will bump into each other occasionally, it certainly won't be as frequent. I am excited about the level of competition in the AAC, not only in men's basketball, but in all of our sports, and it is almost certain to raise WSU's level of recruiting and it's own level of play in all of those sports as well. I am equally excited to travel to a lot of great cities, broadcast from outstanding facilities, and make friends with my new colleagues, some of whom have already reached out to me, and who seem to be a close-knit and congenial group."

Keep in mind Mike went to WSU and grew up watching the Shockers in the hey-day of the sixties. He has great memories of the battles with Cincy, Louisville, Memphis and later on Tulsa. As stated, Mike will miss the Valley, but it is time to move on. Thanks to Mike for his insight. Any thoughts from our members?

And now he gets to relive sotme of that with hopefully many future battles against Cincy, Memphis and Tulsa.

Completely agree with his assessment. A dream scenario for sure. On top of not having to bring back football, four former Valley teams in conference. Can't wait for next season.

It sounds to me like if Mike had any reluctance about leaving the MVC, it was coming from personal relationships and friendships, not from a simple opposition to the idea. It sounds like he is close friends with people who he probably had many conversations with about it and their perspective was coming from the other direction because of how it will affect the league if we leave. Since they were friends, it would be tough to be on the side of the school that is "creating the problem." Mike probably knows it is a better move for the school, but not for many of his friends or even his own personal life. He's in a tough spot. Makes sense to me. It probably feels sort of like how you would feel if the company you worked for for the last 30 years got bought by a bigger company and they kept you but laid off some of your friends and coworkers.

That response seemed to indicate that he is warming up to the idea of being in the American more than he was initially.

Ask Mike if he has ever called a Football game on air and what his favorite WSU football memory is.

If he was doing football in 1982 (and I know that he was doing basketball by then), then the easy answer is probably 13-10.

When he said that it was initially tough for him, "initially" was probably a couple years ago when rumors started that this was being explored. Mike is diplomatic and classy enough to have such an answer showing appreciation for the Valley. Like he said though, there was almost no way that the Valley could get back to a really strong conference, so as the idea of going to The American became more real, I'm sure he became more excited.

It was this last season - because he responded to a caller on the pregame show who asked the question about the AAC rumors and his response was less than enthusiastic.

Fair enough. I didn't hear that but I don't get the chance to listen to pregame shows, so I'll take your word for it.

I would still wonder if he was being diplomatic. While we were still in MVC, he couldn't go on air and gush about another conference that might or might not happen. Mike has too much political savvy to do that. Also, maybe he just did not think it would happen and thus wouldn't allow himself to get excited yet.

Doc and I got together to watch the two NCAA games. Doc of course is one of the most loyal Shocker fans out there, and he was throwing the brakes on any excitement because he couldn't see how another conference would take us without football.

Clearly you're just not that good of friends with Doc and he was messing with you.

Mike took over the voice of the Shockers ~1978. Bill Land moved on to Tulsa and Mike took over full-time. Mike and Former WSU QB Hank Schichtle called football games beginning in Mike's first year.
