Most people I know that complain about parking at the arena were people that voted no to it anyways or have never really been out of the city of Wichita and have no idea how major city arenas work. Parking for IBA is WAY better than most arenas.

I didn't live within Sedgwick County at the time of the vote but I supported the idea of a downtown arena. Of course I thought there was a chance they would support it with adequate parking. Those that think there is enough parking in downtown and around IBA need to talk to business owners. Remember, one of the reasons for not supplying parking was people would need to park further away and walk by businesses and would stop and spend time and money there. Thus far that has proven not to be the case. You really can't compare Wichita to other cities facilities due to weather and a lack of public transportation as others have mentioned.

I think Wichitans favorite hobby is to complain about parking. Students love to complain about parking on campus when you can park pretty much anywhere by Eck or Koch during school hours. The longest POSSIBLE walk on campus from corner to opposite corner is barely over one mile(really it's even shorter than that, I included all of innovation campus), needless to say it is unlikely you would need to walk that far given that there are only some campus buildings near one corner. Now on game nights during the week can it be a pain? Certainly, but welcome campus life all over the country.

Have you ever seen people cruise parking lots ie Dillons or Town East waiting for someone to leave that may be a couple of spots closer to the entrance? First wife used to gripe that I took the "first" available spot and didn't drive around and see if there was anything closer. Solution....drive to the front entrance, let her out and then I could park in peace and quiet. Also how many times have I parked and walked in while the same clown is still driving around the lot looking for that one spot two slots closer to the door.

I'm kind of the anti-Wichitan. I intentionally park far away so that I have a long walk. I need all the exercise I can get. And if the weather is nice, my wife and I enjoy the walk through campus.

I do this everywhere, at work, grocery store, restaurants, etc. Got to get those steps in on my Apple Watch. :)

...because they have to walk a lot...They aren't lazy...and they plan ahead for how long it will take them to get somewhere.

It's part of their lifestyle. A New Yorker would look at the distance we have to walk to get to IBA or to CKA when we have to park across campus and say "what's the problem here? This is how far I walk out of my apartment to get to the subway on the first leg of my commute, and that's just the beginning."

I'm with @Shocker-maniac. Learn to enjoy the walking and the fitness that directly stems from it. Make an extra effort to choose to walk further than you have to just for the fun of it and the relaxation of it. In the case of IBA or CKA, if you come 15 minutes earlier and park a half a mile further than you normally would, you will find that there is literally no one around you in the parking area you choose. It's easy to get in and out of, and boom, you lost weight in the process. Even your stress level is down because you aren't rushed or concerned you won't make it on time. And wouldn't ya know it? You can visit those businesses along the way that were hoping arena people would stop in and bolster the downtown economy.

Except you can. You can compare it to other midwestern cities. KC, OKC etc. IBA is easier to park and get to than Chesapeake or the Sprint Center.

Oh, my goodness, THIS....I once parked 11 blocks away for a Cardinals game, 12 blocks for the Big 12 Football Championship, and two MILES away for a Big 10 football game. IBA is cake

I have parked closer to every IBA game than I get to park for all WSU games. I am not sure where people are parking that they think it is a longer walk.

This .. The few times I've been to New York, I noticed that. No one is fat there. No one is able to park right by the front door, then hop on their motorized scooter for the rest of the trip.

I'll chime in on the parking. My work has 60 spaces 1 1/2 blocks from the arena. Saying it never sells out is a stretch, 90% of the time you can roll up 10 minutes before your event and get a space. The problem isn't lack of parking it's willingness to PAY for it. Most of the lots you can reserve spots ahead of time if you call the business, we reserve spaces. Can't tell you guys how many people are driving up having spent $100's of dollars on tickets to an event and complain to me for asking $5 or $10 to park in my lot. Laughable...Park Angry.

Lol! The local Y has people dropping memberships if rhey can't park at the front door instead of the lot directly across the street.

Wichita is a tremendously car dependent town. It would take years of investment and marketing to change that with the CAVE crowd kicking and screaming all the way. And in fairness, Wichita has a combination of tough winters and brutal summers that works against it.

Nevertheless a schlep from Old Town to the arena isn't going to kill anyone. This is also not a notably unsafe area until the bars close on the weekends, long after any game would be over. St. Louis is a much crappier town and we manage to walk a mile plus to the games there without incident. Or, spend $10 on an Uber, get dropped off at the door, get as hammered as a Creighton fan on dollar beer night, and get dropped back off at your door.

I paid 10 bucks to park for the OSU game this year. I was able to park just south of the Arena on the East side of the train tracks. It was about a 5 min walk. As you stated, there is PLENTY of parking. It just not all free. Nor is parking free anywhere in most big cities. I remember paying 42 dollar for 2 hours of parking in NYC.

Now that's absolutely hilarious! To me, one of the MAIN reasons you work out is to sweat. It looks pretty foolish for someone to refuse to walk a couple of hundred yards in a parking lot, but feel it is perfectly fine to go into an air-conditioned gym and ride a stationary bike, run on a treadmill or whatever.

Wasn't it Baylor who we scrimmaged before the final four or undefeated season? I remember a quote of 3G about realizing them WSU was going to be really good that year.

I kinda like walking, I count it as extra exercise. I don't think it's that a lot of Wichitans are car dependent, a lot of major cities are, they are lazy and cheap. They want to park up close for free and those two things are mutually exclusive.
