Why they’re here: Think about this: The Shockers were outstanding this year, rolling up a 31-5 record and pushing No. 2 seed Kentucky to the brink in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and everybody’s back for Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall. Lock them into another 30-win season, whether they’re playing in the MVC or the AAC this fall.

•The Shockers finished the season ranked in the top ten at KenPom, but ended up with a No. 10 seed in the NCAA tournament because they struggled to get used to each other early on in the season. With everyone returning from last year’s team, don’t be surprised to see Gregg Marshall’s team as a Final Four contender.

2. Wichita State: This was supposed to be a reloading season for the Shockers, yet they pushed Kentucky to the brink in the round of 32. Everyone of consequence returns, and coach Gregg Marshall won’t be lacking for motivation after the selection committee relegated his team to a No. 10 seed. Whether the Shockers are in the MVC or the AAC, they’ll roll.

Sully just released a breakdown of WSU's "way too early" rankings. Of those included, our highest ranking was No. 5 from Yahoo and the lowest was No. 10 from Fanrag.

Wichita State ShockersWichita State went 31-5 and finished its season ranked eighth in KenPom.com's adjusted efficiency ratings and 15th in the BPI, and here's the scary part: The Shockers were just getting started. The Shockers of November were still adapting to the losses of era-defining guards Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet. It took a few weeks -- and a couple of nonconference losses -- for Landry Shamet to slot in to a more natural point guard role, where he (and sharpshooter Conner Frankamp, playing off the ball) immediately thrived. Nonconference losses, a weak Missouri Valley and the selection committee's laughable reliance on the RPI saddled Wichita State -- a top-15 team, by any measure -- with a No. 10 seed, whereupon it lost to Kentucky (which, for the record, turned around and throttled UCLA) by a bucket in the second round. Everyone is back. The Shockers have business to attend to. And yes, they will be angry.

Well, Paul S. Certainly isn't holding back at this point. Hope his sources are correct.

Expect our ranking to drop once they start announcing the last few blue chippers to the blue bloods. It seemed that was the case 2 years ago when the earliest polls started us in the top 10 and by the time the season rolled around we were around 15.
