  • What if.

I have a question to those of you who are a little more in the inner circles of Wichita State basketball. After Turgeon left Wichita State, I know Jim Schaus had Scott Sutton on the short list of coaches. My question is was Scott Sutton offered the head coaching position at Wichita State? I thought I had heard a rumor that he was but changed his mind and hence Coach Marshall was offered the position. I was hoping to get some clarification so that my shocker history stays as accurate as possible.

Scott Sutton would sell his soul for the Wichita job. That deal was not accepted.

I highly doubt Scott Sutton was offered the job.

IIRC, he was headed to Wichita for an in person interview when the press released that HCGM was interviewing as well.

Something told him to head back to Tulsa.

IIRC we heard Sutton's name and were excited about it, but he wasn't Schaus' first pick so he kind of removed himself from consideration. HCGM was Schaus' target from the start I think. Someone else may have been closer to the situation. Feel free to correct me.

My memory was that media speculation had Scott Sutton coming to Wichita. I'm pretty sure that our people had contacted his people, just like Schaus was making contact with others but Gregg was the one Schaus went after first. The media had no idea about Gregg but the media in Wichita and Tulsa knew about Sutton. The media frenzy was wrong and when it was obvious to Sutton he was not going to be the guy, he announced he was not a candidate.

Marshall was #1 choice, Sutton was a backup in case we couldn't come to terms with Gregg.

I remember Marshall being my personal number one target. I still remember watching Winthrop almost beat Tennessee the year WSU beat them to go to the Sweet 16. I looked more into Gregg and Winthrop and was very impressed. So of course, after they were ranked the following season and won a tournament game, I knew he was the guys I wanted if no "bigger" school came calling.

It's funny how things work out. I'm sure glad everything unfolded the way it did. Gregg and WSU have been a match made in heaven.

Wasn't Daddy Sutton also mentioned by a few media members?

when i first heard his name mentioned, i thought "no way we can get him".

what he did at winthrop- it seemed like his next stop would surely be, say, indiana, ucla, st. john's etc.

and that's why jim schauss is a certified legend- he hired a clearly ucla, indiana ready coach at wichita state.

                  and it stuck.

I seem to remember that WSU didn't want Scott Sutton coming to Wichita, but wanted to meet with him somewhere in between. He knew then he was not WSU's first choice and declined to meet by taking his name out of consideration.

I remember as soon as I heard Gregg's name floated out there, he was the man I wanted....no ifs, ands, or buts. Not sure which one was my biggest "happy dance"... getting Gregg or Fred.

I didn't think we had a chance at the time. I remember his last year at Winthrop when they played UNC, and looked almost as good with almost as much talent, thinking why can't we be that good? And that was after we had went to a sweet sixteen.

I had no idea who Marshall was. I wanted Scott Sutton. I am as of yet without any D-I AD offers.

Looked up Eddie Sutton just to read a little more on him, and holy crap have the past 10-15 years been hard on that guy. Looks like he's aged and declined by twice that much. He's 80, but going on 95.
