Dave the Rave's statue will be placed in the atrium of Koch Arena. :applouse:

Doesn't sound like they will need it but I would encourage everyone to chip in whatever that can to make this happen. Even a $5 or $10 donation wouild honor Dave's memory. I think they might be surprised how quickly the donations will roll in on this.

To donate: Checks should be made out to the WSU Foundation and designated for the Dave Stallworth Memorial Fund.

And I'm confident he will write a nice check. Ron and Fred no doubt will do the same.

I wonder if they perhaps should have dreamed a little bigger on this. Perhaps the Dave Sallworth Memorial and Scholarship Fund with a goal of perhaps raising enougth to endow one or more a academic scholarships. However, I may be way over-estimating how much money they will or could raise.

Perhaps excess funds from the Memorial Statue, if any, could rolloer into this.

I don't want to obscure or otherwise deflect attention from the most important thing here - which is getting a statue placed - but one thing jumped off the page in that article.

Who in the hell with WSU "hesitated to get involved" and potentially deflected this to Intrust? What a travesty that would have been to have it anywhere but the Roundhouse and alone on all but one of the nights of Shocker home games.

I don't have a dog in the fight like many here as far as opinion for current or former ADs, but that seems like a really big whiff to me. Especially worded that way.

Other reaction is - wouldn't people prefer this outside? Hell, make it out of the same stuff they made Jordan's United Center statue out of and you know it won't have weathering problems. It also makes a more dramatic outside shot for TV games a la the United Center, and from a practical standpoint won't slow down ingress or egress because of the space consumed or people taking pictures.

(Note - I live in San Antonio and only get to a home game once every other year or so. If I'm mistaken about the atrium location being on that southwest side of the arena next to the parking lots, disregard that last comment)

I agree on both counts. Why did they not jump on board from the start? I also think the statue would be better placed outside of Koch. For those of you that went to the sweet 16 at the Staples Center, think of the statues outside that venue. I believe that there is a bigger impact outside of Koch.

Yes the Atrium is on the SW part of the arena. I don't know that anything is set in stone (or bronze) yet. Bob Powers did say he would leave the official announcement of details to Dr. Bardo in September. WSU may have good reason to locate the statue inside but perhaps an e-mail to Dr. Bardo and ADDB suggesting that might be a better spot based on your experiences elsewhere would be worthwhile. Not sure I have a preference. Would have to give some thought. Inside reduces the maintenance to clean up the inevitable bird droppings and greatly diminishes the chance of vandalism (although don't know why anyone would want to do that).

Thanks. I was there and the Staples Center statues are an even better example. Magic, Kareem, West, De La Hoya, and Chick Hearn come to mind. In fact, many decades from now I wouldn't mind having a Mike Kennedy statue - seated behind the scorer's table - calling a Fred Van Vleet statue's 3 point shot versus Gonzaga.

Second choice for MK would be him complaining about the equipment during commercial breaks - if anyone else out there braved internet radio in the late 90s and early 2000s (I even called the radio station a couple of times to talk to the engineers)... you know that the highlights of many of those games were the pregame, postgame, and commercial-free broadcast banter.

Anyway, I digress. No-brainer on the Stallworth statue. I've run into more than one old-school college basketball fan from Philly or Chicago, and the first thing they associate with Wichita is Dave The Rave. One guy in particular that grew up watching every Big 5 game in the Palestra in the 60s said he was one of the best if not THE best college basketball player he ever saw in person.

                          Great anecdote. Thanks for sharing.

I truly wish we had more video recordings of Dave The Rave in action.

Why not a whole area outside dedicated to the All-Americans that have been Shockers? Dave could be the anchor and the others honored.

Fund raising bricks could be sold to the public to raise additional funds.

                            It should be located outside.

Good idea. The Bledsoe Plaza outside of Eck Stadium is nice. Place Dave's statue in the middle of something like that. In addition to bricks you could sell the naming rights to the area.

I assume anything they do could be changed later. So if they started with it in the atrium I assume it would not be all that big of a deal to move it outside at a later time if they decided to do that.

That might depend on what the statue is made out of. Construction for indoor may be remarkedly less expensive, too. Whether it could moved from indoor placement to outside might depend on those things.
