In the real world, you would still get fired for that too.

    • I believe, based on what I have read, that HCGM and staff have very specific discussions with prospective student athletes about their opportunity at WSU. I think it goes something like this, 'We don't recruit back-ups here. We believe that if you put it the effort necessary that you can be a starter in this program. At the end of each year we will evaluate how close to that level you are playing, but you will already know the answer to that based on how practices are going and where you sit on the depth chart. We will give you every opportunity to succeed, but in some instances it doesn't work out. If that's the case, we will help you to find the right fit.'

I then think that at the end of the season HCGM talks to the kids about whether or not their scholarship will be renewed, and what they would have to do to earn it back. I'm pretty sure he told Ri'an that his scholarship would NOT be renewed.

I'm okay with all of this, but empathetic to the players. If as a coach you don't win, then you most likely won't have the opportunity to coach very long. By employing this strategy, you improve everyone's chances of success, including the kids you help to find a new home.

      • Scholarships are renewable on a year to year basis. It is also a two way street. When a player signs he is not locked into staying for 4 years, he can transfer. go play professionally or quit basketball any time he wants to.

A school can place restrictions on where a player can transfer to or even refuse to release a player from scholarship.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

          • HCGM plays more guys than just about any coach in the nation.

If you are not getting minutes your best option to play may be to transfer.

Multiple ex shockers have found the right fit elsewhere. Transferring is a win-win for all parties involved. There shouldn't be a rule to prevent it.

A school cannot place restrictions on where a player can transfer. They can say you we won't release you from you scholarship if you go to a certain school, but they can still go there. It is also very rare for a player to not be released from a scholarship.

Typically what you will see is attempts to block transfers if tampering by the transferee school is suspected or restriction on transferring within the conference. Generally, I think conferences like to avoid intra-conference transfers as well. Occassionally you will get a vindictive coach who will try to make it has hard as possible for a player, but that is pretty rare and the vindictive coach and his school usually will lose in a public fight in those instances.

Seems like most parting of the ways under Coach Marshall have been pretty amicable but perhaps not 100% so.

But if the choice is ultimately the player's choice, to be made after receiving the projected outlook for him in the programs as compared to his outlook in other "opportunities," then the kid makes the choice. I do think that if the player does not want to transfer or quit basketball, he/she should be allowed to continue on scholarship at the school, whether it be an athletic scholarship or an "equivalebnt" scholarship.
Admittedly, most of the coaches handle it smartly and discreetly. You would need to put yourself in the position of the player. If the guy deciding the playing time says "you won't see the court if you stay", you might as well go.

But that scenario burns an additional year of eligibility, which has the effect of making the transfer not possible.

Almost all schools always give releases to anyone wanting to transfer. To not do so would be effectively used against it in recruiting.

                      • This general topic is why I've become a big supporter of a sophomore year redshirt. Come in as a freshman. In your limited minutes, the school sees your potential, or lack thereof. If you stay at the school, you can redshirt as a sophomore, if you need it. If you transfer, you don't lose a year.
