  • Margin of Victory

Both Bob Lutz and Mike Kennedy have recently commented on our crowds and the less than normal levels of excitement due to games not being close. Got me to wondering so I calculated the following totally worthless pieces of data. The numbers pertain to the current string of NCAA tourney teams starting with 2011/2012 and including this year's to date, 5+ seasons.

All games played we are +2816 points
    Home games +1898
    Away games +635
    Neutral site games +283

MVC Regular Season we are +1523
MVC Regular Season home games +972
MVC Regular Season away games +551
    Saint Louis games - 117
    Total against MVC opponents, +1640

    By Season
    2011/2012 +485
    2012/2013 +335
    2013/2014 +565
    2014/2015 +449
    2015/2016 +469
    2016/2017 +513

Obviously I'm not easily bored which is why I always stay to the end.:D

I move that we rename the MVC the "Margin of Victory Conference"

Moral Victory Conference was also a good option for a name change. Both are more accurate descriptions of the conference than the current name of Missouri Valley Conference, that hardly represents the geography of the conference anymore.

On a semi related note, if we can beatdown the next 4 teams by an average of 33 a game, we will pass the Oscar Robertson Cincy teams for MVC largest margin of victory.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

+2816 points divided by 205 total games = +13.74 per game.
+1898 points divided by 95 home games = +19.98 per game.
No wonder we have trouble getting home and homes.

        MVC Contributors
        Bradley + 291 - Avg 25.25 per game (12 games)
MSU +215, Avg 19.55 per game (11 games)
Drake +210, Avg 17.08 per game (12 games)
SIU +205, Avg 18.64 per game (11 games)
ISUB +147, Avg 12.25 per game (12 games)
LOY +128, Avg 16.0 per game (8 games)
ISUR +115, Avg 9.58 per game (12 games)
EU +108, Avg 9.82 per game (11 games)
UNI +99, Avg 9.0 per game (11 games)
Cre +5, Avg 1.25 per game (4 games)

Does this include the valley tourney games?

The 2816 total includes Saint Louis. The MVC Contributors are regular season games only, no MVC tourney games.

Still would like to know what the team records are for MOV, home, away, all. Hard to believe anyone is better than this year's team, especially at home.

              Current win streaks:

              Illinois State - 1
              Northern Iowa - 1
              Indiana State - 10
              Evansville - 8
              Bradley - 15
              Loyola - 11
              Southern Illinois - 8
              Missouri State - 13
              Drake - 11
              Kansas - 1

                Nice little nonconference footnote, Doc.

I feel like Doc got off to a slow start this season, but is really rounding in to form as we come down the stretch.

The 2013/2014 35-1 team had a point differential of +565. Last nights game took the current team to +587 with more to come.

So far Wichita State has shot 42.9% from 3 during conference play. Our opponents on the other hand have shot 42.6%. From inside the arc.

Bonus stat: UCLA currently leads the NCAA in 3PT shooting % at 42.1%. So it is fair to say Wichita State could be the best shooting team in 2017.

3 non con losses... 3 point shooting:
                        6 of 22 (27%)
                        5 of 22 (23%)
                        3 of 17 (18%)

If WSU keeps up the 40%+ from behind the arc, both St. Louis and the NCAA Tourney could be a lot of fun.

I don't think we will keep shooting 45% from 3 once we start playing quality teams again.

I do think there is something very obviously different about Frankamp over the last 6 weeks that isn't due to competition level. And I think that difference helps more than just himself in the shooting department.

This team has enough weapons and good enough defense that 45% 3pt shooting isn't a necessity. But, 24% isn't going to cut it either. I think there is room to envision a reasonable middle-ground that could still result in WSU wins against quality competition.

But I submit it's not just Conner's improvement in this department, it's also Landry and others who are shooting the three more consistently. But your point is valid, at some point we'll face much tougher defenses (one could argue we've done quite well against a great defense in Illinois State).

I'm giving Frankamp a little credit for 'rising tide.' He has at least one, and sometimes 2 guys jumping out at him any time he touches the ball within 5 feet of the 3pt line. That's helping everyone.
