  • Non-Conference Grades

Here is how I would grade out the non-conference season. At this point in the season - what you see is probably what you are going to get.

    Non-Conference Schedule: B+

There has been some misses (LBS, Tulsa, STL) who will be a drag, but WSU can hope that LSU, OU and Colorado St. do better as they could finish in the top 100. There is certainly was some good opportunities with Louisville, MST and OSU.

    Non-Conference Execution: C+

One more victory, and it is probably B+/A-. Overall, their at-large resume will be pretty weak with likely no Top 50’s wins and probably no opportunity to garner any in the MVC. If they can blow through the MVC maybe they can still get an at-large.

    Shaq (Jr) – C

We see glimpse of how dominant he can be, but doesn’t look like he has the motor for it. WSU really need him to take big step forward, but he only improved from 15.6 min/g to 17.2 and increased his scoring from 6.8 to 7.6 ppg. Just to show how uneven he is – he lead the team in 13 blocks (9 of them came against LBS and OU). WSU needs him to improve his grade if WSU.

    Kelly (jr) – C

Another veteran that has not significantly improved from last year. I thought he would take a big step forward this year. His ceiling looks to be a role player where he might score 10-12 pts on isolated nights.

    Brown (Jr) – B+

Zach has taken the jump forward. He has went from 6.7 ppg to 10ppg. He has improved his 3pt shooting from 31% to 42%. His assist to turnover has increased from 0.9 to 2.1. He has the ability to hit the 3pt while getting inside and getting to the FT line.

    Nurger (Jr) – C

Had high hopes for him, but it looks like he is just a role player (and there is nothing wrong with that). He being a starter probably speaks to a bigger problem with the work ethic of some of more skilled players. His minutes have doubled (7.6 to 16.1) but his scoring has only improved from 1.6ppg to 4.8 and is only averaging 2.6 rbds (for 7’ that is kind of inexcusable).

    Frankamp (Jr-R) – C-

There were some that said he was just deferring to Fred/Ron last year. But he’s actually averaging less scoring (dropped from 6.1ppg to 5.8), his assists to turnover has decreased from 5.6 to 3.6. He is playing 1/3 more minutes (increased from 17.1 min/g to 21.4 min/g). His 3pt shooting has dropped to 32%. It looks like he another veteran who has a ceiling of being just a role player . He is important because he does give depth at PG and with the right matchup will probably torch some MVC teams. If people calm down their expectation for him, he is probably a B type player. He is isn't going to be all-league or carry this team - but he can make some teams pay during conference play.

    Willis (Jr-xfer) – A-

He is now averaging 11.3 ppg and 6.1 rebounds. He is shooting 55% from the field. If his game against OSU is any indication, he could put up all-league numbers against MVC opponents. He has been a nice surprise and acclimated well to D-1.

    D. Smith (Jr-xfer) - B+

He leads the team in steals; he can shoot the 3-ball (43%) and hitting 90% from FT. Negatives are he is only averaging 3.1 assist/game and can turn it over a little. Had he had a little better game against OSU, probably would have given him a grade of A.

    McDuffie (So) – B+

His scoring has increased from 7.4 to 10.8 and his rebounding from 3.3 to 4.8. His shooting has improved – he is shooting 44% from the field and 36% from three. My expectation was coming into the season that he would likely be scoring leader, but I am going to give him a break, because it looks like his knee is still bothering him and so he probably playing through some pain.

    Hamilton (So) – D

I would have thought we would have seen more progress with him. I don't know what else to say about him.

    Shamet (Fr-R) – B

I think we forget he is still a freshman. He is putting up solid numbers with 8.2 ppg. Needs to improve his 3pt numbers (32%). I would expect we will see him continue to get better and grow as the season progresses.

    Reaves (Fr) – B

He is shooting an amazing 52% from the 3pt line. Up to the OSU game, he was 5 for 8 in the last 3 games from 3pt and was looking like he was getting comfortable, but he took a step back against OSU and dropped his grade some. But if he can stay injury free, he should not only get better as a player but would expect his contribution to grow. I think he’s going to eat some MVC teams alive if they a doubling down on Willis/Shaq.

    Keyser (Fr) – C-

Obviously the injury over the summer set him back. When he has gotten opportunities has struggled with turnovers and has not shot well. Plus there were the academic issue that cost him a game. Hopefully, as he gets his feet under him he can contribute a little more during conference season.

That's pretty much on target for me.

The team, record-wise, is where I thought it would be. We've had an easier time against all lesser competition than I thought and generally recovered from the shakes in 2nd halves where 1st halves have been a problem. The lack of energy, focus, and play angry in the last game was very disappointing. I hope I don't see that again. You may have a poor shooting night, get out physicaled (that's not a word), or have brain farts due to inexperience, but there is no excuse for lack of energy, focus, and play angry.

I'd give Shaq a B-. Against Louisville, Michigan St, Colorado St, OU, and OSU he has played 21.4 mpg. He fouled out of 1 of those games, but had only 2 PFs in 3 of them. I could turn the blocks around by saying he has 8 of his 13 in the last 4 games, all coming against CSU, OU, and OSU.

Smith's TOs have been reasonable at 1.4 per game. However, he has been a very streaky scorer. In 4 games he had double figures averaging 13.2. In another 4 games, he averaged 7 per game, and in the other 4, 3 he didn't score and one game had 3 for 0.8 per game. B to B+, but "had he had just a little better game against OSU", I would not raise it above B+.

While you point out Shamet is a freshman, you didn't mention that Reaves is a true freshman. While Shamet is a work horse and good on D most of the time, Reaves shooting % has been outstanding to be mild. Also, Shamet averaged 9.8 ppg the first 5 games. It's been 7.0 the rest of the way against generally tougher competition. Don't think I'd change either of the grade, maybe a B+ for Reaves for being more than expected so far.

Kelly's shooting inside the 3 last year was a regular topic with the number of bunnies he seemed to miss shooting .448 for the season. However, this season, he is at .511. While playing just slightly less this season so far, his scoring has gone from 4.6 to 5.3 pg and rebounds from 3.6 to 4.1 pg.

Speaking of 2 point shooting, Brown is at .564 and Reaves .615. McDuffie's has gone down slightly from .489 last year to .464. Conner is at .444 (.468 last year) and Shamet .375 (that needs to improve a lot).

Very good analysis! My only point of disagreement would be that I think Reaves deserves an A- and Shamet a B-. Reaves, to me, has been the surprise of the year, I'm a little disappointed in Shamet. He seems to miss a lot of what I think are easy shots (I think he missed at least 2 and maybe 3 reverse layups against OSU. If you get that close to the bucket, he should either be drawing fouls or making the shot). He also appears to be a streaky shooter that seems to miss 3 point shots when we really need them.

I think that Nurger is coming around and may have a great senior season (think Paul Miller territory). If he makes as much of a jump next year as he did this year, it could happen. I actually like seeing Nurger start over Shaq and using Wills at the PF and totally agree that Shaq has been a disappointment and may not have the motor I thought he had.

I had high hopes for Nurger becoming an important cog with the start he had. Through the first 7 games, which included Atlantis, he was at 7.6 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 14-23 for .609 FG%, 5-8 from 3pt, 12 PFs (5 against MSU) 1.7 pg while playing 17.4 minutes a game. Against Louisville and Michigan St he had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

However, the production has mysteriously disappeared. For the last 5 games: 1.0 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2-11 for .182 FG%, 0-4 from 3pt, 14 PF for 2.8 pg while playing 14.2 minutes per game.

Shaq may not be performing like we hoped, but over those same last 5 games: 9.4 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 21-34 for .618 FG%, 1-2 from 3pt, 13 PF for 2.6 pg while playing 19.4 minutes per game.

Since this is a non conference grade card, shouldn't we wait until after Thursday's game. Seems a bit reactionary to do this right after a disappointing loss. Not that I disagree with the assessments, but the guys should redeem themselves some on Thursday.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Why wait? If they do what they did to similar teams, why would assessment change? The size of a blowout shouldn't change anyone's mind regarding the non-con, so there is no "redeeming" involved. The players have already set the bar pretty high.

On the other hand, if they don't all react well to what happened in the last game and what followed after that last game, there will be more questions than answers.

So aren't you saying that it would be good to wait?

I chose to do the scorecard at this time because I had the time then to do it and I didn't really think the SD ST game would/should change anybody grading. They are a 200+ RPI team. So it is not a redemption game IMO, even if they put up 100. I guess it could drive their grades lower if they lose or play like crap.

A physician called into a radio show and said:

Pretty close to the grades I would give except I'd give CF and RN
both B-. To date, the only thing I've been disappointed about CF
is is shooting %. Every other aspect of his game has been solid.
As for RN he does so many little things well that most fans just
don't notice. While he doesn't get a lot of rebounds just notice
how he blocks out and enables a team mate to get easy rebounds.
He constantly sets screens that help his team mates get open. He
can't be ignored inside or out offensively and his defense has been
pretty solid, as well. His shooting % has been pretty decent. I think
he has performed better than most of you all thought he would.

Not sure JRS at 4 helps this metric of evaluating basketball. I guess I'm just not a numbers guy.

This seems to be irrespective of usage, so you have to account for that. The higher a particular player's usage, the more likely their performance will regress towards the mean. Which also makes Darral's performances pretty incredible.
