  • Thoughts after cooling down (literally)

So the game versus Oklahoma State was arguably one of the worst Shocker performances in years. I've seen a lot of negative talk about our players, but I think that is misguided. We expected inconsistency, we should not be surprised when we see it. Still, I think there are some consistent patterns in our losses.

Louisville and Oklahoma State both started hot, hitting a three. Michigan had a small run started with a three when the game was tied 12-12. We responded in each case by tightening up. This team plays completely differently when they are tight, something foreshadowed a little last year by the disappearance of many of our players past our home loss to UNI. We need Willis's swagger to spread to everyone else, with a double dose administered to Conner.

We also need a consistent offensive identity that doesn't get thrown to the wayside when we miss our first shot or our opponent comes out hot. That probably means shooting more 3s, as that is clearly the best part of our offense. We have shot just 50% at the rim against tough competition (Top-50 teams average 65% or more), and that isn't counting the number of times we travel or throw the ball away. It isn't an athleticism or height thing; we shot around 60% last year at the rim with less height and athleticism by taking better shots instead of simply driving to the trees because we lacked the confidence to shoot jumpers.

We are beating ourselves more than we are getting beat. Lots of empty offensive possessions, poor rebounding efforts, unforced TOs, easy transition buckets. These are fixable issues, just as FT shooting could have tipped the scales in Atlantis. OSU probably wins no matter what if they are going to shoot that well from 3 even when guarded, but we make it a game if we fix these issues.

One more game in the regular season, then we'll have to wait to March to see how much progress we've made in our composure against decent competition. It is mostly mental.

If tonight is any indication the Valley is going to be a cold road for GGG and the Shocks this year. Other than that, my main thoughts right now are geared toward gratitude for the Holidays...

I expected this young team to be up and down this year. We have tons of talent but we are not physically ready to punch back when we are punched in the mouth at the beginning of a game. We need a mean streak of playing ANGRY to be imparted to everyone on this team.

We struggled mightily against the athletes from UL, MSU, OU, and OSU. Fortunately we squeaked out a victory in OKC. I saw fear in their eyes last night and we need someone to step up and be a Bad Ass and lead the Team to play without fear. I am not sure who that is going to be.

Daishon has got to be more consistent. We have all seen what he can do when he turns it on. It is hard for a big man to lead the charge, but Shaq can be that guy if he stays on the floor. He can be the voice but It cannot be just talk. He has to back it up. Landry and Markis are probably the most talented but they seem very quiet. They are probably the go to on the offensive end. Darryl is showing signs of leading by example. When we need a bucket inside he is the man but he is lost on defense. Zach is starting to show some leadership and is also playing like a leader. I saw several instances of him telling teammates what to do and a few times literally pushing them into the right place including Daishon. The question is how soon will someone take charge of this team? I think by March we will be fine but the sooner we find a consistent leader the sooner we will be a good basketball team.

From a fan perspective, here's my take on last night. Many of us warned about it after the Canadian summer trip. Coach Marshall and Mike Kennedy have touched on it more than once. "This could very well be a Season of peaks and valleys, hi and lows, ups and downs." However, at 9-2 approaching this game after beating OU and CSU on the road, I the eternal optimist was expecting a tough game, even in Wichita, versus the Cowboys but actually deep down expected a win. A close win maybe, but a win. Sound familiar?

What does it all mean? What happened last night reminds us the original narrative we warned of is still in place and last night drove that down my throat. Yes, Ok. State was better than I thought and hit on all cylinders last night on both sides of the court and played a great game. However, the Shocks are our team, and even after getting drubbed last night, the learning curve continues and the original narrative continues to be reality, even as we approach the Valley Race soon. How will our young Shocks react from this loss. IMO, we will strive on but with our guard up, proceed with caution, striving to improve as a team, even when we lose.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

Great guard play can beat wsu. The Shockers simply cannot defend elite guards. I don't see this changing until DS becomes an elite defender. Landry can defend, but usually has 2 fouls early and then sits, just like Shaq. Marshall needs to find a starting lineup and stick with it. That lineup should not include Nurger.

Last night was another learning experience. Their constant pressure threw us off our game as it is designed to do. Let's hope that the lesson is learned and we grow from it.

              Random thoughts:

It may be time to shorten the bench

What is the point of sitting players with 2 fouls in the first half and letting the game slip away?

Pregame we put on a dunking exhibition like I haven't seen since UNLV last year and then we came our and played a lot like UNLV did last year.

This team is more than fine physically, mentally not so much.

Don't know when we've had such a "frontrunner" team. Meaning they look incredible when they get a team down, but tend to crawl in a hole when they get punched in the mouth. This could be summed up with one word, but it's probably not appropriate to use it here.

Well Austin is one player who I predict will have grown up after last night. He got spanked and diapered by OSU and sent to his room.

I have to keep reminding myself it's 1 game. Yes a bad game, but still just 1 game. We most likely will end the non con 10-3. All 3 losses are to tournament teams (OSU is a sweet 16 team if they play like last night). We will drop a couple of games in the valley but 16-2 isn't unreasonable. There are no teams in the valley the caliber of OSU, MSU, or UL. 26-5 still gets us in if we fall in st louis. Probably won't make much noise this year, but all of these players will be back. They will all grow over this year. They will all be better next year.

We'll learn from it. Unfortunately, we won't know how much we learned until NCAA tournament time since our remaining schedule doesn't have any opponents we can play against to test our learning experience.

                          Two things:
1)With their 4 & 5 defending 25 feet from the basket, we should have posted up their 1,2 & 3.
2)We should have figured out that with their outside shooters, we could not afford to sag in and help as much on the weak side because we kept getting burned with a penetrate and dish, or skip pass to the weak side.
Kick 'em square in the grapes! (that can be very painful)

This is not the first loss where our overcomittment by the help defense left our weak side more open than a lap dancer at a Cardinal recruiting party. That's fo sho.
