Pretty awesome, sadly not sure I see that type of environment happening here.

    • Are we going to devote half of the arena to students? No, but there are some useful ideas in there. I particularly liked how they made the it an event instead of just a game. They turned game day into a really great party and oh by the way there's going to be a basketball game too. There's no reason we can't copy elements of what GCU has done and make CKA "the place to be" on game day.

WSU is somewhat of a non traditional school, maybe its time to do some non traditional things to raise the water level of the student section. What the athletic dept/university is doing isn't working so its time to try something different. I think we can all agree that a boisterous and engaged student section makes it more fun for all of us.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

      • I think this is exactly what needs to happen. If student groups like Marshallville and Maniacs get with the athletic department, get the creative juices flowing they can improve it. The Roundhouse is a pretty special place with a rich history. We are in the midst of renaissance period of some of the greatest basketball this University has seen. They need to jump on this opportunity and start traditions and build on the ones that are there. I've seen people mention that we're kind of missing the mark with our whole MTXE and Play Angry things and I completely agree. It would be so rad to see ginormous banner that the student section pulled out with a giant WuShock and "PLAY ANGRY" in giant print that went over all of them that they could wave before tip-off.

This is kind of petty thing, but I really wish we had some nice banners that were in our school colors too. Maybe condense all of our NIT banners into one and then had a special place that highlighted all of our Valley Championships, NCAA appearances, sweet sixteens, elite eights and our 2 Final Fours. That's one thing that annoys me about our NCAA banners, it's like the cheap looking ones that the NCAA send to us with ugly logos on them that blend in with all of the rest of the banners.

It's a special time in Shockernation and they definitely need seize the moment. Maybe we need to start a group on Shockernet to petition them, maybe shoot some ideas their way?

        • FWIW i thought the student section was pretty good for our final home game. That said, it should be like that night in and night out.

          • No doubt, they were and were especially great for the ILSU game too. I think we all know that a conference change we do wonders as well.

            • As a student I'm all for the general public getting unused student tickets. What I wish would change about this is that those GA tickets need to be above the band. Against Northern Iowa I had a family in front of me when I was in about the 8th row, and one of the kids was sitting on her Ipad the entire game. It's pretty ridiculous to have to have some mom turn around and give you a dirty look every time you yell at Higgins to open his eyes. I feel like the students who do try and make it to all the games are the ones being punished having to sit in the new childcare / old folks section.

That's a pretty good point and you would hope they would have some common sense that they should probably go to the top, away from students. That was a problem when I was a student along with the old goofy bastards that graduated a couple of decades ago but are still taking a few credit hours for the tickets. Bottom part of the student section should be reserved the eye candy and the rowdy bunch. I don't know how they overcome that problem.

                • It's no doubt the students sitting in the lower half of the student section aren't the problem. They're the regulars that show up and know all the chants. I was one of them just a few years ago and I agree with WingDing that they shouldn't have to share that with families, children, and older folks. It ruins the rowdiness of that section, especially if they're getting glares from moms with children (what were you expecting, lady?). I love these ideas of having non-student GA being above the band and to make a huge tarp with "PLAY ANGRY" on it.

                  • If they would let the student section unveil a tifo before every home game, well, it would be awesome. If you don't know what a tifo is, here is one done up at a Sporting KC game.

That was badass. How do we make this happen?

I regret not ever going to a sporting game when I lived in KCK. They look like a blast.

The banners in CKA definitely need a reformat and reboot. Aside from the fact that we are literally running out of space (a great problem to have, in and of itself), they look REALLY cheap, and more importantly they block light and PA sound to the upper 4-ish rows, giving a bit of a cave or attic vibe. CKA is a special place, and the Roundhouse Renaissance was a massive success and is still aging well, but the banners in their current format are a detraction in a number of ways.

Back when the Roundhouse Renaissance was in the conceptual phase, there were professional drawings out there featuring the banners in the middle of the ceiling, around the scoreboard like spokes of a wheel or rays of light. Looked sharp. Those drawings are still out there as I've seen them relatively recently, but I'm on mobile so I'm not messing with it right now.

TOTALLY agree on the Play Angry and MTXE thought too. Such a marketing and branding pot of gold sitting at their feet, and they're too busy doing who knows what to notice, integrate, and capitalize.

I'm not a student, but I 100% agree with you. Make that section student-only say floor level of entrances and below, and open seating above it. Can't be that hard to make that happen.
