  • Jfc, what is so hard to understand about the whole scheduling thing? It's like people don't read others posts.

    • Turgeon used to make the rounds at the fraternity houses to drum up excitement. I wonder if Marshall does that?

      • Selling the tickets to people who will not buy them is stupid. Sell them to people who will buy them.

Also, the way University culture is these days, there are probably students hiding in safe-spaces, afraid of being offended by anyone.

All (half) joking aside, I've spoken up to the athletic department that they need someone on campus that's job it is to get people pepped up with Shocker Pride and to get butts in seats. They also need to hire someone new to run in game promotions, because they are crowd killers.

I expect IBA to be rocking and to have MVC games pick up the intensity at CKA. No more Xenon School of Hair teams on the schedule. Yes, the bottom half of the Valley is very weak, but every conference game matters.

You are correct to a point but our sparse crowds in past years when we play blow out games has not been greater than half of the student section. Beating teams to a pulp is not new. Sell out crowds that are actually sparse with some empty seats are not new. This has happened for as long as I remember (and I go back a long ways). However a total section (a student section no less) that is probably about 600 empty seats out of 1000 seats is totally new. This is on the students and make no mistake about it, the fault of this lies with the students. Obviously, not 100% of the students but out of 15,000 students, not to fill up the 1000 seat student section ( with FREE tickets) is embarrassing. Did I mention that the tickets are FREE? SMH

                  • I was wondering about this the other day. Could it simply be the lack of students at games is because the star power of both Baker and VanVleet are no longer there? I dunno. Perhaps a new "personality" simply needs to emerge. Perhaps Baker and VanVleet were just that engaging. Again I dunno...reaching perhaps.

I don't think that is all that farfetched a thought....

                        • I have no problem with the students not going to some of these dud games. I do have a problem if they are hoarding unused tickets. However, it seems that the general public has had inexpensive tickets available to the past few games. Some combination of the "4 P's" of marketing is not working for the consumer. When McDonald's sales were down they didn't blame their customers' apathy for their product, they offered all day breakfast.

Also, players calling out students on social media will have little impact if the students don't care about basketball.
I think this is also an important part that many overlook. It seems that students don't have as much of an interest. Sure, they have a casual enough interest to come for bigger games, but it isn't a die hard mentality by any stretch.

I would posit that most students attending the games start as casual fans and become diehards over a period of time. For this to work you have to capture their interest early on in the process with an exciting product and you have to do it every year due to attrition from graduation and other things. I hate to say it but we haven't had that exciting product so far this year at home.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

I'm confused. I feel like there is a lot to be excited about with the Shockers. We can't control that LBSU totally destroyed their confidence with their crazy road schedule (honestly, WSU may have broken them). We can't control how good these other teams are. Tulsa and SLU are from the conference's we want to target. Additionally, why should we be trying to schedule crazy hard with a team that is still trying to identify roles?

I'm very excited about the product we are putting out there. I do like the idea of trying to engage campus groups to participate in games together. Go to the leadership of fraternities/sororities and get ideas for Greek competitions during the season. Maybe trot out a 7ft goal and have the students do the dunk competition, putting Greek houses against each other.

Get dorm leadership to sponsor events at each game. Themes, etc. The university is always looking to get more traditional strident engagement on campus. Make it concurrent with a basketball game.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.
