Originally posted by Aargh View PostI spent the afternoon in a social setting with a lot of Shocker fans. Probably wasn't a good day to be wearing my yellow "Play Angry" shirt.
The Shocker fans I encountered pretty much agreed with Fever. They thought Marshall embarrassed himself and the university. His reputation took a hit with them. One who said he didn't like what Marshall did went on to say, "but he was protecting his players". It's only on ShockerNet that I've seen, heard, or read any defense of Marshall's actions.
I think Marshall made a fool of himself and has some issues with anger management. Maybe I'm different from some SN fans, but I'm able to see flaws in a person and that doesn't affect whether I support that person. I see flaws in Marshall, but he has my 100% support. I'm not going to defend his actions, but that doesn't mean I want him run out of town. It's possible to see weaknesses in people and still admire, respect, and support them.
Marshall's antics are possibly making him an unpopular hire with the fanbases of some schools that might want to hire him. that's fine with me. I'll take any possible advantage we can get in keeping him here until he retires.
It's a bit like having the diamond in your wife's ring appraised after a few years of marriage and discovering a flaw you didn't think was in there when you bought the stone. You might be disappointed, but that shouldn't change your attitude on what that ring and that stone means to you.
I see flaws in his actions. I'm not happy with what he did. Now that that's out of the way can we get back to supporting the very best basketball coach we are likely to ever have. I have seen Self throw fits that were every bit as angry as the one Greg threw and have to be restrained by his coaches and players. Snob Hill gives him a standing ovation. Greg, please stay another 20ish years and retire as our Hall of Fame coach.

Marshalls outburst only made me love him more, I believe it will pay dividends for this team. Sometimes I wonder if you guys have even seen Bull Duram. I don't think anybody is suggesting getting rid of Gregg but this is the same fan base that was behind running off one of the winningest baseball coaches ever, so before we venture too far down this high road just zip it and be grateful squeaky clean Bruce Weber isn't our coach.THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

-More hyperbole? Maybe or maybe not.
-For another side, I've not talked to a Shocker fan yet who has reacted like the fans you talk about.
-What are these flaws you speak of? (Sarcasm intended)
- I think that most Shocker fans know he has flaws. Some like my wife didn't like the way he flipped his watch around (or Gregg himself for that matter) but now that she has seen him in action in the community for years likes him-
-The few fans who don't like Gregg and who do have an opinion about Gregg are probably Beaker fans who take out of context everything he does and MVC fans (some are ok with him and some hate him but they all wish he was their coach) who don't really know him.
Aargh' opinion of Gregg is fine and there may be some Shocker fans who he still rubs the wrong way but I've met few of them.

One of my chicken buddies said to me "At least Dean Smith gets ejected with dignity." I kid you not, that's what he said. :boxing:

For me...the outburst in Canada was no biggie. Had he had done that type of outburst during the regular season my opinion would be different. Why would my opinion differ??? Cause as bad as officials can be during the regular season during regular NCAA play...it seems in Gregg's mind that it was over the top worse in Canada with the "refs in training". Protecting players in that environment was needed and obviously nobody was listening to him until he decided to go ape-****.
Good for Gregg. Bad for image...but whatever. I bet Mr. Nurger smiled at him from his hospital bed and shock his hand.
On a side-note...when you run a clean program for as long as he has and graduate players...and every other great thing he has done over his career as the underdog...but yet still gets the SHAFT from a lot of NCAA/MVC/CBS forces...he gets a pass in my book. Particularly in a hot gym in the middle of summer off the grid so to speak.
Also...I wonder how many other high profile coaches who stayed coaching in the MVC as long as he has and had to deal with Elgin/CBS tourny schedulers, etc would've done the same thing in a scrimmage in Canada in a hot high school gym. Not too many cause all those type of coaches would've bolted from the MVC after all the success he has had and ran to Alabama, South Carolina, UCLA etc.FINAL FOURS:

Can anybody who can read lips look at the video and tell what Marshall is saying to Willis when Willis is directly in between Marshall and the officials? It sure doesn't look to me like Gregg is screaming at the officials, but rather conversing loudly with Willis."I not sure that I've ever been around a more competitive player or young man than Fred VanVleet. I like to win more than 99.9% of the people in this world, but he may top me." -- Gregg Marshall 12/23/13 :peaceful:

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".
A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."

It must be slow in the summer...we have beat this horse beyond death. If there is an opinion it has been written and debated and in some cases Frank Marshalled. (My new alter ego name when he does what we all have done some days).
So
Let it go, let it go
And He'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect Gregg is gone
Here He stands
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway!
