My morning after thoughts:

No matter HCGM's intent, it doesn't look good when the people who know you best (Players/Coaches) feel like they need to physically restrain you. It indicates they were not comfortable relying on 3G's self control.

We will get some interesting coverage, a few new haters, and the opposing fans will have some new material to work with. Beyond that there will not be a measurable impact of this.

There are days I wish I could go off like that!

HCGM will have to be well behaved for a while. Things like this can add up - If Mangino can get fired for behind the scene stuff after making KU football relevant (probably the most impossible accomplishment in recent college sports history) anything is possible.

I think that's a reasonable take on the situation. I would like to see our AD suspend Marshall for whatever exhibition game we have on the schedule, with a mutual understanding that it's an attempt to help offset the negative publicity (whether deserved or not).

I wish I could find video of the Altman meltdown to compare this to. I couldn't even find a story about the game (assuming I'm remembering it correctly).

Our best lineup appears to be Frankamp, Shamet, Brown (3), McDuffie (4) and Shaq with Willis backing up either the 4 or 5. Smith has a long ways to go and I haven't seen this blazing speed on display yet, or any shooting touch for that matter. Nurger looks like he's ready to contribute some this year. As someone else said, Peyton Allen is gonna struggle guarding the 2. He may have to stick to the 3 spot as a reserve.

I'm just hoping more players will step up & sell out on both ends of the court. If so, we can win the Valley, because it will take nothing short of that.

I agree, but I am not sure how an official's non-calls are equivalent to a coach kicking a video screen and confronting the ref.

Fans in the stadium did not view this as a "dirty" game. If we were running away with the score I don't think fans watching the game would have thought much about "dirty" play.

I finally found something. It was the 2006 NIT, 2nd round vs. Miami (FL): According the AP story appearing in SIU's The Southern:

On the game's final play, Johnny Mathies collided with Diaz as he tried to get off a last-second 3-pointer from about 35 feet. There was no call, and the referees ran off the court as fans threw objects onto the floor and Altman ran onto the court to protest.

"People thought it was a foul," Diaz said, "but he was looking for contact. He elbowed me."


Altman said, "That's just the way the game goes. I shouldn't have lost my composure."

Maybe I'm a simpleton, but the way I see it, The refs were calling a shitty game and tournament. Whatever...3G's team didn't have any fire and he deicided to let the anger go and give it to the refs. The problem is he went a tad overboard. The end result.... The young team flipped a switch and won the game, the young team realized that Gregg has their back and hopefully better understand he means business. He wasn't yelling at players just refs. Hell, "blue"used to get it a lot worse than that from Brent back in the day. From the outside people see 3G and the Shox as the bad guy and its part of our identity. I say publicly apologize to the refs and move in. Overall for 3G...mission accomplished, the team got the message.

Anyone who knows the game could see that after the first almost every pick was illegal, and we began the game trying to guard with our feet like we are coached to do, but they were using their hands and pushing/shoving a lot of the time. Maybe it shows what they know up north.

This is a pretty good example of what happens when you get a coach in who has absolutely ZERO accountability. No one in the athletic department to tell him different. He has been given the "okay" from past Athletic Directors to walk all over Doug Elgin... (I have my complaints about Doug, but still). The last piece of the tirade was him clearly trying to push a coach into the ref. That's just not cool. Call it PC if you want, old heads...but this is 2016 and coaches can't do that. Period. Watch for every sports anchor to rip us on this tonight.

Here's an interesting column from someone who focuses on the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport).

In university ball, if CIS vs. NCAA teams is something we all want, there is an onus to make sure the gatekeepers, the officials, have to have everything they need to keep a situation from escalating. It's reasonable to say, without faulting the officials, without faulting McGill, that Gregg Marshall's grotesque behaviour exposed gaps in Canada's basketball infrastructure.

It was abject and inexcusable. Throw in the hot gym and a hotly contested game, and I can see why Marshall lost his mind. I fully assume this will be laughed off as a one-off incident, the hotheaded NCAA coach acting like a fish out of water. It is that, and if you want to see it as such, go right ahead.


This would not happen in a regular CIS game, where the coaches and officials see each other almost every weekend. Point being, that is a thin thread to hold on to, and CIS and Canada Basketball got an unfriendly reminder of it this week.
