Indeed, Van Vleet said he could have been picked twice midway through the second round, 47th and 54th overall, but told the two teams he wasn't interested in their developmental plans. He said both teams wanted to stash him in the NBA Development League for two years, where he would be "slaving away for $20,000 a year."

Instead, he plans to sign somewhere as an undrafted free agent.

"Everyone wants to get drafted, but in the end it's about the money. I am already getting offers for $50,000, $100,000 just to come to training camp to try out," Van Vleet told the crowd with a microphone from a stage immediately after the draft.

How does the salary for a 2nd round pick work? I know the contract isn't guaranteed, but what rights does a draftee have? If he were taken in the 2nd round, the team can't force a 20k/year contract on him, right? The league minimum contract is ~400k, so I would think if the team offers him a 20k salary to play in the d-league, he'd be able to negotiate with other teams. He seems to suggest that is incorrect.

Teams draft all those Euros because they know they won't need to pay them. Probably the same situation with the D League.

They may get a minor contract that requires them to play in Europe or the D League, thus retaining their rights so another team doesn't snag them up. These players are getting some sort of compensation during this period, although I have no idea how much that is, probably a very small amount. Being a free agent allows players to shop their services until they find an acceptable situation, such as $100k just to come to training camp, as FVV mentioned.

I don't know what to expect from Fred in the NBA. I think his ceiling is really, really high. If he's given the right opportunity, I think he could be in the NBA for 15 years, and ultimately be a pretty good starter or a really great back-up. I could also see no one taking a chance, and he goes to Europe and makes good money for a while before coming back to the US to coach.

To me, Ron has a little more narrow range of possibilities. I think Ron could play in the NBA for a long time, but I'm not sure he'll ever be a starter. I also feel pretty confident that he's guaranteed a few years in the NBA. I don't think he's ever going to be relegated to Europe, at least not early on in his career.

I, unlike many on here, really like watching NBA games, but it's so much more enjoyable to watch games with WSU players getting serious minutes.

Exactly. One reason so many Euro players are drafted, yet you don't see them on rosters, is so the drafting team can retain rights to them in the future, should they develop into NBA caliber players while in the Euro leagues.

I could almost see the exact opposite outcome with Ron having the lengthy productive career and FVV being the career backup.
