  • My favorite line in that story is from Bush:

“I knew right off the bat I didn’t want to go to junior college because those guys, they’ve got some dog in them,” Bush says. “At juco you’ve gotta grind a little harder and let’s be honest, I’m more of a pretty boy.”

I'm going to miss both of those guys. They both bring something to the culture of this team that few of us realize.

Thanks @jocoshock: I saw this in my news feed and lumped it into the Annual HCGM thread, which I hope makes its way quickly back off the front page of Shockernet.

          • Others may have already pointed this out, and if so I apologize; but I just clicked on the ESPN rankings section and looked at their latest BPI: the mighty Bilas and Co have WSU ranked #21, just a hair behind #20 Notre Dame and a hair ahead of #22 Arizona (!).

By the way, for those who care, Creighton is #24 in the BPI but well back in the numerical rating. (In other news, Gonzaga is #8 -- Villanova is at the top, with Virginia second and Louisville's escort service third -- and The Flagship is #11.)

            • Perhaps this should be in the 'Crazy Gregg Marshall rumors thread', but I thought this article was very complimentary of both him and our program:

Interesting to note all the love for Marshall while admitting he probably isn't a viable candidate for their job due to 1) money (they don't have enough) 2) lack of ties to Chicago (he has none, I would tend to agree)

                    • The articles about Marshalol certainly have changed. It used to be that he was a lock to leave. Now they all seem to say there's no way a P5 school could get him with skepticism that he'd even pick up the phone.

It sure is nice that the jobs we have to worry about opening up are at "blue bloods" and i'm not even sure Marshall would leave for one of those jobs.
Its a good landing if you can walk away, its a great landing if the plane can be reused the next day.

                        • Overall the article is not bad. I think the author is trying to analyse the situation from the Illini point of view and from Coach Marshall's point of view (hard to do if you haven't asked him personally). But there is one clear mistake. The write says,"and has made more lateral moves from Charleston to Winthrop to Wichita State." I don't think the move from Winthrop to Wichita State was a lateral move. This writer clearly suffers from PCP disease (Power Conference Prejudice).

When a person is stricken with this terrible but curable disease, they tend to believe that all power conference school jobs are "better" than all non-P5 jobs. Like I said, this disease can be cured. It requires turning off ESPN and taking several trips to KOCH arena, or to Spokane, Washington and the New Kennel, or the Siegel Center in Richmond.

                          • Indeed, Fairgame -- maybe the writer should ask 3.3G if HE thought Winthrop to WSU was a lateral move; or if Marshall thinks so now, after one Final Four and roughly 3 million extra laterals per year.

"Gregg Marshall is currently in his 10th season as the head basketball coach at Wichita St. During this span he's built a true mid-major dynasty from the ground up, putting Shockers on the national map, and keeping them there.

The evolution of exactly what the program has accomplished over the past decade can best be depicted by looking at Marshall's tenure as a whole. Prior to the arrival of Marshall, Wichita State. has only appeared in the NCAA tournament eight times in 100 years...."

Always appreciate good press, however, this is a little glorified and lacking.

"Prior to the arrival of Marshall, Wichita State. has only appeared in the NCAA tournament eight times in 100 years". The NCAA tournament had only been around for less than 70 years prior to Marshall. Also, they hadn't been to their first NCAA until 1964, so that's 8 tournaments in 42 years with the last one just 2 years prior to Marshall.

Adding KenPom metrics would have made as big or bigger point.
