Something cool I came across today - a searchable database of SI stuff, including articles, videos, and more. Supposed to span the 50+ years of SI history. If you need to find the video of when Jenn Sterger (the FSU cowgirl) made her visit, you can find it here, amongst other things, including some old X highlights. Try searching on:

    Wichita State
    Wichita State Shockers
    Wichita State Basketball

    and the like. Kinda fun!

Great preview of the 64-65 Shox at this link:

the Shockers should have a fine won-lost record and the lead in the Missouri Valley Conference. After that, for 10 more games, they will try to cling to the gains Stallworth has won for them. But they will be a completely different team, and perhaps a losing one, because Stallworth is that good. A fast and quick 6 feet 7, he averaged 26.5 points and 10 rebounds last year and is worth up to 40 points a game with his assists and playmaking added.

Just a question about Stallworth. I knew he was ineligible for the second half of the season in 64-65, but was there any way the Shockers could have held him out of the first half of the season and used him in the second? I'm assuming the answer is no, but I don't know for sure about what the rules were back then.

          From February 1963

The word for the week was oops! Seven of the nation's top 10 teams lost, including the only two unbeaten ones, Cincinnati and Loyola. It was enough to send NCAA and NIT officials, ready to issue invitations to the lush postseason tournaments, back to their worksheets.

          THE MIDWEST

All season long Wichita had been waiting to get Cincinnati into its Roundhouse. The last time Cincinnati was there they lost by one point. Now they had won 37 straight and, when Wichita's Ralph Miller bravely predicted, "We have the balance and manpower to beat them," he wasn't taken too seriously. After all, Cincy had beaten the Shockers 63-50 earlier in the season. With 3:30 to play, Cincinnati held a six-point lead despite 39 points by Wichita's Dave Stallworth. Usually such a lead is more than enough for the Bearcats, but this time it wasn't. Tom Thacker fouled out, and Tony Yates and Ron Bonham each had four fouls. Perhaps because they tried to be careful, Cincy's impeccable defense came apart. Seven straight points by Stallworth put Wichita ahead 65-64 and down went the Bearcats, winning streak and all.

          Thanks for the link.

            1965

They came back to throttle Louisville 96-76 as Stallworth closed out his eligibility with 40 points and a neat little speech. "It was a pleasure playing for you," he told the 10,465 fans assembled in University Fieldhouse. "I needed you people and I will miss you."

Dave Stallworth is still a good citizen of Wichita!

Just to emphasize a truly tremendous WSU basketball feat that will likely never be equalled or surpassed -

Stallworth scored 46 out of WSU's total 65 points.

Cincy must have been double and triple teaming him at some point or most of the game. Can anyone who attended the game verify this?

I went to the game as a Shocker infatuated 7th grader. What I remember was a man to man. The double teams had to happen but what I remember most is the offensive explosion. It has to be one of the best performances in college basketball history.

Cincy was absolutely loaded. Ranked #1 and two time defending NCAA champion. I believe Thacker and Bonham were AA. Yates was a tremendous leaper and also a star.

Dave scored from everywhere. Pull up jumpers were his primary weapon. Everyone else appeared to be in slow motion. When we were behind late in the game I remember him scoring, stealing the inbound pass, and scoring again. I believe his last two points were from the line.

There was a picture of Dave at the free throw in the paper the next day. "The Shots Heard 'Round the World" was the caption. I've had the opportunities to visit with Dave about this game and several others. What a wonderful man.

                Thanks for asking. :)

I've been to that site and used the search thing. Huh, it works for basketball too. Interesting, but I thought some pictures with some great beaches were the main attraction.

I was at that game as well. I don't recall any triple teams. I do remember Cincy at times doubling. Although the stats don't indicate it, Wichita did have other very capable scorers on that team including guards Ernie Moore and Leonard Kelly as well as Nate Bowman, Wayne Durham and Dave Leach. It was just an awesome display of one man taking over a game, particularly in crunch time. That season featured the most exciting basketball that I have ever seen including an overtime win over 4th ranked Arizona State, totally dismantling 2nd ranked Ohio State and closing the season with a road win over Loyola of Chicago who was ranked somewhere in the top five. Loyola went on to win the NCAA tournament that year, beating Cincy in the final.

I was hooked on Shocker basketball for life.

I believe that the Shockers were the only team to beat both teams playing
in the Championship Game at the Final four that year (Layola & Cincinnati).
