Ron, Armstead, Coleby, Allen and Frankamp were all the same type of "walk-on". They all had to pay for their first year with the agreement of a scholarship coming their way.

        A weird and disparaging post.

Regardless, Ben Smith isn't an "oh yeah, that guy" guy.

Wasn't meant to be disparaging. Probably better named the "Oh yea I loved that guy!" team. Guys who's contributions may fall through the cracks or be overshadowed, but none the less important and fun players.

Ron was a walk-on (member of team and not on scholarship), but did not play as a walk-on.

No ****. The post is for fun and includes a list of guys, not just Ron, that "walked on", i.e., paid for their own education for one year, or in Simon's case, 3 years now. Maybe that's how it should have been titled for those with tight undies.

They aren't the stars you remember until you look back and see their name. Then you say, "Oh yeah, [that guy]."

Ok I'm bored of talking about Jans (happy for him though), and football (isn't this a basketball forum?). Lo and behold its been nearly exactly a year since I started this thread last off season so here we go.

Can't take Stutz or Murry anymore as they have graduated from this game.

                      13: Hall (5)
                      14: Cle (4)
                      15: FVV (1)
                      16: Baker (2)
                      17: Shamet (1)

Others I considered: Cotton, Shaq, McDuffie, Armstead
Again, I wish there was a way to get Armstead on the team in this exercise but you just can't play anyone at 1 but Fred. A reasonable answer I think would be to take Cotton in '13, and Shaq from '17.
There is also an argument to be made for Mcduffie at the 3 from '17 over Shamet but I went with Landry based on his ridiculous 3pt shooting.

There are probably other good answers to be had but I think all serious answers have FVV, Baker and Cle in there somewhere its how you fill the other 2 spots that most interesting.

                        2013: Hall
                        2014: Early
                        2015: Cotton
                        2016: Baker
                        2017: Shamet

Tough to leave off Fred. Went for size. You can reasonably substitute Fred for Ron. There is no substitute for Tekele.

I considered this but I just couldn't bring myself to leave FVV off this team.

This is sacrilege, since I'm leaving the smartest basketball player I've ever seen off of it, but ...
                            PG: Shamet ('16-'17)
                            SG: Baker ('14-'15)
                            SF: McDuffie ('15-'16)
                            PF: Early ('13-'14)
                            C: Hall ('12-13)
...I'm going with it because I think Landry Shamet is going to be the natural evolution of Fred VanVleet. We've already seen him employ the hesitation drive to great effect, and I don't feel too uncomfortable saying that Landry is objectively a better shot from 3.

Point of information: If Shaq had Carl Hall's energy, there's no way he'd be off of this, or really any other list of note.

Just going to point out how many awesome players have been in this program over the past 5 years, that 2 (at least semi) reasonable answers have been given that do not include the 2 time conference player of the year who is also our school's all time assists leader...

No doubt that FVV is the greatest PG in Shocker history. To leave him off the team should be unthinkable. Yet, I did it anyway....
