  • I think TT's transferring is actually a good sign. I don't think he would have transferred if he
believed he was one of the top four guards going into next season with opportunity to compete
for meaningful playing time. As good as Ty is it's obvious that both he and GM believe there
are at least four better, maybe more. That's a GOOD sign. I'm very comfortable with either
CF or LS at PG but I suggested a long time ago that all of our guards are good ball handlers
and shooters making them interchangeable at the THREE guard positions - I think we are a
three guard offensive team ( SF just a third guard ) and ALL of our guards can play point, SG or
SF. I don't see us as having one dominant PG like FVV but I also don't see ANY weakness at any
of the three guard spots. We will have very good guard play, improved perimeter shooting, and
adequate depth. In addition, although I admired EW's grit, we should be much improved at the
PF position with MM, RK, Willis and EH. If RN and RK show noticeable improvement, a distinct
possibility, and Willis pans out, we will not only dance but probably with a 4-8 seeding. Not
worried about the back court. Overall, we won't be as strong defensively and give up about five
more points per game but we will make it up, and possibly more, on the offensive end. Before
I get jumped on I DO recognize that CF and JRS won't play the SF position.

Coach was high on Ty and thought he had a good future ahead of him. Unfortunately, there aren't too many players like David Kyles who ride the pine for 2 years before getting any significant playing time.
You're correct, HCGM did not ask TT to transfer, he simply took his scholarship and offered it to AK, who accepted.

AK? Have I missed a new commitment?

This was the competition he was looking at for backcourt minutes in '16-'17 and beyond at that time - Brown, Henderson, Holland, and Shamet. None of which had ever played a collegiate game at that point. If you're a talented, confident PG with numerous high-major schools interested in you, that sounds like a pretty good situation to step into. If you're a coach who probably already has doubts about at least one of those backcourt guys already on the roster, a player like Taylor is an important commit.

Flash forward a year and a half and the competition for backcourt minutes in '16-'17 is Shamet, Brown, Frankamp, Allen, Smith, Keyser, Reaves, and Taylor. I think its safe to assume Smith and Allen are going to take Baker and Van Vleet's spots ahead of Taylor on the Guard depth chart, so even if he stays ahead of the two incoming Freshmen, he's not looking at anything more than mop up minutes for the next two years. Redshirting is an option, but Marshall is going to keep recruiting, so there's no guarantee Taylor is ever going to be an important piece of the puzzle. If I'm Taylor, I transfer, and if I'm Marshall, I want him to transfer, both for Ty's sake, and for the program going forward.

The bottom-line is, based on the information they had in September of 2014, Marshall made a good decision to offer Taylor a scholarship and Taylor made a good decision to take it. Just because the information available in April of 2016 leads both of them to decide its best for him to go elsewhere, that doesn't make the first decision bad. A good shot is a good shot, regardless of whether it goes in or not.

Marshall gets paid a lot of money to put together a roster capable of winning conference titles and NCAA tournament games year in and year out. That's the level WSU is at now. You don't get there or stay there by setting aside 2 or 3 of your 13 precious scholarships each year for guys you've put out to pasture.

Good luck to Taylor, by all accounts he is a good kid and he should make a good D-1 player somewhere. I know some Valley schools recruited him. I wouldn't mind him going to one of those and continuing to help WSU by raising an opponent's RPI.
Great first (and only?) post Ty, good luck in your future basketball endeavors!

I agree, those are some mighty high expectations. I'll be happy if Daishon (who I think will be our starter) makes the all-newcomer team and maybe 3rd team all-conference (or honorable mention). None of our other PG candidates have played PG much (Frankamp) or are pretty green (Kaiser, Shamet, et al.). I don't count Brown or Allen in the PG group because they are SG/SF types. In fact, Brown hasn't played PG much either, if you think about it, and he's been here two full seasons.

Has WSU ever had a juco pg start from day one with Marshall?

Clevin started 33 of 34 games in his first season.

Clevin Hannah is the only one I think, but a bit different circumstances there since the only returning scholarship perimeter player was Graham Hatch.

No, unless Hannah started (data isn't available from what I can tell...although indications are that he may have). Ragland did not start right away. Toure ran point for a while.

Hannah started games 1 and 2, but did not start game 3 in 2008-09 season.
