Yeah, but they went down, which means he already has a good touch
Just... No. He does not have a good touch. He is accurate when he gets set perfect. His shot is laser flat and if anything disrupts him it will hit the back of the rim. He HAS to fix that. That and that alone is why a RS makes sense. Remember Toures sophomore year? His shot was all over the place because he was changing it. Look at Kobe now. He is going from a 2 motion to a 1 and he can't hit the broad side of a barn. It takes time to change shooting mechanics.
I am good with it either way.

First, Ron wasn't on scholarship during year one. Therefore it was the modern day equivalent of stuffing a player at Sunrise.
With that point made, I am sure Gregg didn't want to red shirt Ron. The bigger point is this: if you want five years or think you want five years you are much better off taking the red shirt during the sophomore year. By playing a guy during his first year you get to find out whether they are truly worth five years of scholarships without forcing a player to a juco in his third year of college if they are a bust. That is a total waste of time. Holland is a perfect example of this scenario. Had Holland played as a freshman we would have never seen the sophomore version.
On the other hand, teams without the player's best interest in mind could redshirt a freshman to make a voluntary transfer less attractive since the player would lose a year of eligibility. If the team wants to cut ties with the player after the redshirt year, they can with essentially no ramifications for the team. I think we will always see teams redshirt freshmen sometimes. This "negative" point could be totally eliminated if teams had to guarantee a scholarship for four years and only players could voluntarily end the agreement.
I think a few are jumping to conclusions regarding Taylor. Don't get me wrong, I believe he has
the athleticism and the skills to become a very good point guard. What I didn't see from him was
that PG mentality that is a MUST to play the position well. Forcing up long off balance shots when
we have so many other good offensive options will not get him PT in the long run. I think CF and
LS both possess the mental aspects to go along with their talent. Right now, they are both better
prepared for the point. Say what you want but JRS is an outstanding ball handler, a decent shooter,
and understands the offense. Right now I think he is still a pretty good option at point when Fred
and Ron need rest.
Legitimate question here.. is Barney redshirting so that he may play eventually (albeit a limited role)? Or is he simply the next Zach Bush? My thoughts on his play yesterday are that he can be much like Nick Collison was for the Thunder, a guy who can step in a score a few but is in the game to draw charges

No news on redshirts besides Rauno yet. He is better than Zach Bush, but will not contribute majorly this year. He does not run the floor well and is painfully slow. He reminds me of Jordan Egelceder. He would be a scholie player and contributor 15 years ago or 2008. He would be on scholarship at UNI. Reminds me of Jake White.

I want a national championship. If CF is the better PG, then he should get the backup PG. If not, then he shouldn't. It's really not rocket science. And it may end up being a situational/match up game by game decision.
Regarding JRS, if JRS and Ty are comparable, then I'd want to develop Ty as much as possible as a freshman and get him as much D1 experience as possible to prepare him for end of the season and subsequent seasons. So I'd be giving as much PT as possible to Ty, if I thought he was my future PG, over JRS.
We give a half season pass to our newcomer juco transfers (e.g. their bad shot selection habits, bad passes, turnovers, disorganization, etc). At minimum we must do the same with freshmen. Some freshmen never turn the corner though. But they have to adjust to the speed AND the system, while Jucos only need to adjust to the system (and the tactical speed).
Even FVV struggled behind Malcolm a little at first. Hard as it is to believe.

Conspiracy theories are plentiful. The antithesis to your theory is that a player who does not redshirt, and gets buried behind other players on the bench loses a year of their eligibility. Is that in the student/players best interest? Our team has benefitted from red shirts and older players before who never would have played at Duke. EO, Carl Hsll, Ron Baker, and some others benefitted from graduating at 22+. We also have had other players who played and would have benefitted.
Was impressed with Grady. For a guy with three knee surgeries he was pretty active. He was in on the double team that produced a turnove--Ron intercepted an outlet pass and passed back to Grady that ended in two free throws. So his value is more than on the offensive end. Love the guys energy, passion and experience.
As far as our back up PG, there are a few here that seem to think they know basketball better than the next guy and the next guy after that, etc. etc. Personally, I think 3.3G probably has a MUCH better understanding than ANY of us do, which tells me that he thinks both CF and TT will be important players at some point along the way. I'm completely OK with just waiting to see what decision HE makes, as my opinion will have no bearing whatsoever on the situation.

He is exactly what we needed down low.
Agreed. I was containing my excitement about him, and will continue to do so until we play some better competition, but I was certainly more impressed by him than I had expected to be.

3G did address the need for improved rebounding last night. Wamukota led us with led us with 7 rebounds in 13 minutes but had 3 turnovers. MM had 6 rebounds in 19 minutes but what about his 3 assists which included my favorite one of the game? Shamet and Hamilton both had 4 rebounds. We did have a 14 rebound edge but we missed some box-outs. We did shore-up the turnover issues from the 1st half. Shamet also had 2 assists and no turnovers. Not bad for a Freshman playing 24 minutes.
Adding Grady inside was key as he made 13 points in just 10 minutes. He drew 10 fouls and made 7 of 10 throws. Soon we will add Frankamp to the fold and we will be cooking in olive oil. So far, so good.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.
