  • Hamilton, sorry. Watching football game while posting.

Bush, red shirt? Exactly what good would it do? He can't jump, can't catch the ball and can't shoot when he does.
Sure, keeping him around with one year of eligibility makes all kind of sense.

Still waiting to hear about these drugs you're popping.

    That is all.
Above all, make the right call.

I agree, but that causes the Frankamp supporters some serious apoplexy. If Taylor is the future PG and Shamet is the future SG, then where does Conner end up?

What happened to Conner at KU may be happening to him at WSU. There are better players on the roster. Actually, I don't think Naadir Tharpe was a better option at KU, but Frankamp expecting to convert from SG to PG at a top-10 program as a Fr was absolutely delusional.

        • I think Taylor is much closer to redshirtland than some of you think.

I like his defense. I like his energy. He's quick and he made a couple of 3's. I wasn't impressed with his shot selection though. If those 2 3's don't go down, do you feel differently about him? His PG numbers weren't eye-popping. 1 assist, 2 turnovers. Hell, McDuffie had 3 assists and no turnovers and his assists were pretty nice looking.

All that aside, where does he fit in? If he doesn't redshirt, he's probably looking at 5-8 minutes/game, depending on how big some of our leads are. If you think that's a good situation, then feel free to let him burn a year doing that.

Playing a lot of minutes. You don't have to start to be a major contributor. CF is capable of being very productive at both guard positions. His defense will continue to get better. Some observers are saying his defense has improved since the summer started and should continue to improve going forward. Conner will not be the star of the team...ever, but he will be a significant contributor to the success of this basketball team.

I don't have strong feelings either way, however if he plays 5-8 minutes/game it certainly does not constitute "burning a year." Live bullet action would be particularly useful from many angles. The experience of being a part of this special year is one. Two, his play will be critiqued in film sessions...not only from coaches, but from FVV himself. That experience could be priceless.

frankamp might run into the same problem at wichita state, really. of course he will contibute, but marshall puts defense first, and taylor has him there, in spades.

but the guy that most impresses me is shamet. he's big, quick, smart, and confident. he is the real deal. something like paul pressey. i wouldn't mind seeing him play backup at pg.. like pressey did at tulsa.

1.) wait till fvv gets back

Yeah, but they went down, which means he already has a good touch ... kinda like another freshman PG learning the ropes from a senior ... one that dribbled the ball off of his foot in an NCAA tournament game against a one-seed, then picked it up and drilled a dagger 3 with the shot clock expiring.

I don't mind either way, because Coach knows guards. If he redshirts, it'll be because Coach knows Conner will excel at the point. If he doesn't, it's because he knows Ty is the next pure PG for the team after Fred. Either way, I'm good.

                  Other observations from Sec 120
                  - The kid with the 360 dunk who won free coffee for our section is in my row.
                  - What impressed me most about Shamet and Ty was that they had none of the freshman Stupids out there. That was a decent house for an exhibition, first time in a D-1 game, and they looked comfortable.
                  - Bush on the other hand ... man, I remember the improvement on defense he had between the 1st and 2nd UNI games last year and I hope today was just rust. He did a really good job of shutting down Tuttle in the second game.
                  - Shaq needs to live in the semi-circle. Get the ball, bowl some people over.
                  - Hamilton looks like he could jump out of the gym. Scary athleticism.
                  - Not a lot of flow in the offense anyway, but they got the job done. Ron is a 2 - no doubt about it.
                  - Last year I thought Rauno was going to be the secret weapon. Turns out Zach Brown *is* the secret weapon.
                  - Good grief we're deep.
                  - The rule changes are going to lead to more backcourt trap attempts, and I can't wait.
                  - Also, the TO changes (especially the one that lets them flex the timing of the media timeouts) will help keep the game to appropriate duration. Today's came out just about normal, and I don't expect that to change much.
                  - Glad to hear Rauno is redshirting. Last year he seemed ... almost too happy to be there. If Zach Bush - our resident Hype Man - can get a hard nose, maybe Rauno can too.
                  - It's gonna be a good year.

                    • I won't be making proclamations based on one exhibition game against a D2 team. I enjoyed the game today, the freshmen certainly looked good in their opportunities. HCGM will make the right call on the opportunities those guys are given this season.

Give it a few games, don't be so definitive right now. Ria'n Holland was having his shooting and defensive intensity praised at this point last year also. I do appreciate our depth and am extremely optimistic about this season.

Kelly and Brown running press double teams is scary, scary stuff. Athletic, long and do they ever cover floor in a micro second.
Shamet is smooth. Plays like he has been there for a couple of years. Starts from day 1 for any other team in the league.
Anderson is put together like a Mack truck. Need to reel him in during practice or teammates will find out what friendly fire really means.
McDuffie needs more weight, but no redshirt. Very, very talented.
                        Grady is as advertised.
Taylor is athletic, but needs to put on a shirt. Red in color.
Looking for all of the Bush lovers... strangely silent tonight.

                        That is all.
Excellent points, most especially the first one. Kelly and Brown up front didn't even seem right or fair. When they slap on the double team, it's O V E R.

With that point made, I am sure Gregg didn't want to red shirt Ron. The bigger point is this: if you want five years or think you want five years you are much better off taking the red shirt during the sophomore year. By playing a guy during his first year you get to find out whether they are truly worth five years of scholarships without forcing a player to a juco in his third year of college if they are a bust. That is a total waste of time. Holland is a perfect example of this scenario. Had Holland played as a freshman we would have never seen the sophomore version.
I wasn't aware that it was happening all over the country. I will take your word for it. The fact that Rauno is taking one this year, to me, is only because we replaced Carter with Grady; therefore he didn't move up the depth chart. Last year at this time, it was less clear who would step up and be the second center. Rauno was in the mix. This year, I think it was clear to him that he was the third center with a possibility to fall to fourth depending on Hamilton. I don't think it had anything to do with getting a look at him as a freshman to determine if it was a wasted year. I think it is 50/50 that a freshman will RS still this year, as well, which would make your theory void.

You can say the same thing about Hamilton and McDuffie. Goodness. Talk about being wrapped up by a giant octopus.

                            • Question: Since Ty's jump shot is so bad, did he play in the midget league and only make layups when he dropped 47 points against Raytown South, and drop 30+ in 7 other games, while averaging 20.9 points per game his senior year?

Dude can't shoot even though he went 50% from three in his very first game as a freshman?

Maybe he got his 47 points shooting layups and a freethrow, but only shot 33% meaning he made 23 of 69 attempts in that game? Yeah that must be how he did it. 69 attempts.

Nah, like last night, he just got lucky.

This year may require freshman to redshirt, but that isn't ideal IMO.

HCGM has found a way to bring in a wealth of talent via two transfers that are going to factor in and are basically immediately eligible (mid year transfers and graduate transfers have been unusual). The knock on effect may dictate freshman to redshirt because the minutes are so hard to find. In the future, and maybe even this year, I hope HCGM will only want to red shirt a "sure thing."

Ultimately, I want us to avoid the Holland scenario.
