  • You should never red shirt a freshman. It makes no sense. If you want to red shirt a guy to attain his fifth year you red shirt them as a sophomore.

    • Gregg doesn't agree with you. Neither do I. Ron is a good case in point.

      • Thought our newcomers played fearless today. Shamet is the real deal, and Mcduffie is a stud with a big upside. Hamilton is built like The X Man, he will put some fear in some of the teams in the Valley and beyond. I thought Taylor played well, has a nice shot, and is super quick, will he red shirt, I for one hopes not. I say let him learn on the fly, because I feel we have more studs coming down the pipeline. Fred will get the bulk of minutes at point, and Conner will back him up, but Conner will be playing some 2 guard also. Landry will back up Ron at the two, but is also capable of playing the 3 and some point. Ron didn't handle the ball good today, I like him at the two where he's more comfortable, and he can still play abit of point. But as the season goes along I see Ty playing more point backing up Fred, the guy is a point guard in waiting, let him learn and play now, he appears to be fearless and thats what a point guard needs to be. All in all I like what I saw today, and getting Grady was a big big get for the Shocks, the guy is smooth.

Considering all the before mentioned factors...

I certainly wasn't disappointed, unless you expect us to look like the Golden State Warriors from the first minute of the exhibition season on out.
          Deuces Valley.
          ... No really, deuces.

First, Ron wasn't on scholarship during year one. Therefore it was the modern day equivalent of stuffing a player at Sunrise.

With that point made, I am sure Gregg didn't want to red shirt Ron. The bigger point is this: if you want five years or think you want five years you are much better off taking the red shirt during the sophomore year. By playing a guy during his first year you get to find out whether they are truly worth five years of scholarships without forcing a player to a juco in his third year of college if they are a bust. That is a total waste of time. Holland is a perfect example of this scenario. Had Holland played as a freshman we would have never seen the sophomore version.

            • You may be correct and Gregg didn't know that Holland wasn't going to be a Shocker long term. I was never enamored with his play but I only saw him in some games last year. Gregg gets to see them play everyday in practice. He may not have known for sure prior to last year but I have a feeling that he had an inkling already. It could be that Rian saw the writing on the wall last year even though he didn't the year before.

              • The only time we will see a first year guy red shirt going forward is when they are a "sure thing" behind a log jam of upper classmen.

I 100% disagree with the entire premise of your argument.

                    • Those who think Frankamp is WSU's next PG want to see Taylor RS. Those who think Taylor is more likely to be next year's PG want to see him on the floor this year.

I think it's going to come down to which of the 2 plays better D and which has better BB IQ. Throw in rebounding from the perimeter. There is no way to determine that based on watching a Fr early in the season and never having seen Frankamp, other than at Shocker Madness.

Taylor appears to be the more natural PG. He's got some physical advantages. I didn't see him make any great passes, but FVV was super conservative with his passing through most of his Fr year.

If you look at this year, Frankamp could be the #2 option at PG. Looking at next year and the year after, I don't know if Frankamp can hold off Taylor from being #1. Frankamp is a natural SG.

Shamet showed some of FVV's moves to the hoop. The herky-jerky, stop-and-go, change tempo stuff. Either Shamet always had that or he's already learned some stuff from Fred.

Frankamp has some serious competition for PT. Taylor and Landry are saying (with their performance on the court), "Coach, you've got to play me".
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

Good. Well what is the counter argument?

I have seen us run off freshman red shirts after year two forcing them to waste a year at juco. What I propose is the solution to the Holland scenario and still gets us fifth year production for players that justify it. Obviously Rauno and coach considers this path to be a good idea and other programs are doing it. Playing these guys as freshman allows an extended test drive while allowing them to be sold as "near new" players to their next team if it doesn't work out.

Ultimately, I believe the first year red shirt will become a unicorn as we move forward.

                          • Unsolicited observations...
Kelly and Brown running press double teams is scary, scary stuff. Athletic, long and do they ever cover floor in a micro second.
Shamet is smooth. Plays like he has been there for a couple of years. Starts from day 1 for any other team in the league.
Anderson is put together like a Mack truck. Need to reel him in during practice or teammates will find out what friendly fire really means.
McDuffie needs more weight, but no redshirt. Very, very talented.
                            Grady is as advertised.
Taylor is athletic, but needs to put on a shirt. Red in color.
Looking for all of the Bush lovers... strangely silent tonight.
